At #CIMT2025, Dr. Barbara Maier (CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine) will present her latest research on tumor-draining lymph nodes as a target for cancer immunotherapy. Since 2021, Dr. Maier has led the tumor immunology group at CeMM, investigating immune regulation in the tumor microenvironment. During her PhD at the Medical University of Vienna, she explored innate immune and stromal cell responses to infection. She then trained as a postdoc with Prof. Miriam Merad, MD, PhD (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai), where she uncovered key mechanisms of dendritic cell regulation in tumors. Her research revealed that tumor-associated dendritic cells exist at a tipping point between immune activation and regulation—a balance that can be shifted by modulating upstream factors in the tumor microenvironment. Glioblastomas are notoriously resistant—can T-cell therapies change the game? At #CIMT2025, Dr. Hideho Okada (University of California, San Francisco and The Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy) will present his groundbreaking work on T-cell-based immunotherapy strategies for malignant gliomas. For over 25 years, Dr. Okada has been at the forefront of brain tumor immunology, pioneering discoveries that have shaped glioma immunotherapy. His lab was the first to identify CTL epitopes in glioma-associated antigens and has advanced our understanding of T cell migration into brain tumors. His research has led to over 10 FDA-approved investigational new drug (IND) applications, including genetically engineered glioma vaccines, TCR-based therapies, and CAR-T approaches for adult and pediatric patients. Dr. Okada’s recent innovations include a synNotch-primed CAR system designed to address antigen heterogeneity, off-tumor toxicity, and T-cell exhaustion in glioblastoma. He has also led international efforts to improve radiologic evaluation criteria for brain tumor immunotherapy.
