Last week, the BVES Energy Storage Systems Association met in Berlin to discuss the state of large-scale energy storage in Germany. The excellent turnout highlighted the growing interest in this sector. In the second panel discussion, Maria-Lena Weiss MdB (CDU, German Parliament), Dr. Ralf Bucher (H&MV Engineering), Florian Valentin (von Bredow Valentin Herz Rechtsanwälte) and Benedikt Deuchert (Kyon Energy) joined Vanessa Hensel and myself to share their insights into the current state of play. Large storage projects are coming online in Germany and across Europe, and the business case for energy storage has never looked better! While the recent regulatory changes have helped to create a positive climate for large-scale energy storage, there is still more that needs to be done to enable the large-scale rollout of energy storage in Germany: 🔷 The planning process for connecting energy storage to the transmission grid needs to be streamlined, removing uncertainty about locations and the costs of the grid connection 🔷 Planning approval for energy storage projects needs to be simpler and faster in recognition of the special role of energy storage in the low-carbon energy transition 🔷 There is now a strong political will to establish a supportive and stable regulatory framework, and to ensure that we eliminate barriers to the further roll-out of energy storage Many thanks to our panelists, Maria-Lena Weiss MdB, Dr. Ralf Bucher, Florian Valentin and Benedikt Deuchert for the illuminating discussion, and to the excellent BVES team (Urban Windelen, Turkan Maharramova, Beatrice Schulz, Gerrit Lühring, Simon Steffgen) for hosting this wonderful event. #energystorage #Großspeicher Images courtesy of BVES Energy Storage Systems Association
