Researchers from THE LÄND receive ERC Synergy Grants 👏 The European Research Council (ERC) fund creative researchers carrying out projects across Europe. They enable them to pool their expertise to push the boundaries of scientific discovery. This time, a number of projects from the German Southwest are once again involved. Among others, the research of scientists from the University of Freiburg, Heidelberg and the KIT was awarded. To name just a few of the projects: ▪️The ATHENS project by Professors Christian Koos and Stefan Braese from Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT). The aim is to make optical communication systems more powerful and energy-efficient. This is particularly relevant in view of the increasing demands placed on the transmission of large amounts of data by artificial intelligence applications. ▪️Not one but two professors from the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg have been awarded. Jürgen Kleine-Vehn is researching the plant hormone auxin as the key to plant growth as part of STARMORPH and with the BLOCKADE project, Dr. Elisabeth Piller is investigating how the cutting off of resources and their scarcity affected the age of world wars. These are all promising projects and we congratulate the researchers on the funding! Researchers from THE LÄND are shaping the future of battery technology! In the production of battery cells, being able to react to individual customer requirements and market developments in real time has proven to be an enormous advantage. Researchers at the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) have now developed the world's first agile battery cell production system for this purpose - an important step for the future of electromobility. Robot-supported automation and modular systems make it possible to produce battery cells in a resource-efficient and flexible manner. This allows companies to adapt their processes more quickly and integrate new technologies more easily. Especially interesting: a digital twin simulates production and optimizes it based on artificial intelligence. This research project called "AgiloBat" is a cooperation between scientists and medium-sized mechanical and plant engineering companies. It demonstrates the enormous potential of collaboration between research and industry in the German Southwest. That's why the German Southwest is THE LÄND of promising ideas, new technologies and inventiveness 👇 A recently published study by the German Economic Institute (Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft) looks at the most patent-active German universities in the years 2017 to 2021. Aggregated by federal states, the universities from Baden-Württemberg are the most active with a total of 773.7 applications. 📜 Among other things, these universities benefit from the diversity of their inventors. This is shown, for example, by the fact that among the top 15 universities, almost one in four patent applications from the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen can be attributed entirely to women. And when it comes to patent applications by inventors with foreign roots, the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg) stands out in particular, with a reference value of 26.3 percent. That is seven percent more than the German average.
