Innovative concepts through interdisciplinary research: The 1st #catalaix #Researcher #Workshop took place last week in #Aachen. 51 doctoral students, postdocs, master students and technical staff took part. In an interdisciplinary approach from various institutes of Applied #Microbiology, Technical and #Macromolecular and Inorganic #Chemistry, to Anthropogenic Material Flows and Informatics, we want to establish a multidimensional circular economy and strengthen our team spirit. Using innovative #recycling concepts with catalysis as a key technology, bonds are selectively formed and broken using #renewable plastic and energy sources. #Transforming #Plastic Waste into #Value: #catalaix charts new path in #ChemicalRecycling. Every year, hundreds of millions of tons of plastic waste accumulate globally. While conventional mechanical #recycling - sorting, shredding, and melting - remains the standard approach, it leads to continuous quality degradation. This downward spiral hardly represents the circular economy we need for a sustainable future. At catalaix, funded by the Werner Siemens-Stiftung (WSS) with a ten-year grant, we're pioneering a different approach. Our research center brings together 17 interdisciplinary groups from RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich, focusing on groundbreaking chemical recycling #technologies. Our #mission? To develop cutting-edge catalytic technologies that transform plastic waste into high-quality raw materials for the chemical industry. Mit rund 200 Gästen aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft hat das WSS-Forschungszentrum catalaix seine festliche Auftaktveranstaltung abgehalten. Das von der Werner Siemens-Stiftung (WSS) mit 100 Millionen Schweizer Franken finanzierte Projekt will Kunststoffe in ihre Einzelteile zerlegen und so die Basis schaffen für eine mehrdimensionale Kreislaufwirtschaft. Zur Auftaktveranstaltung hatten die catalaix-Leiter Regina Palkovits und Jürgen Klankermayer nach Aachen geladen. Glückwünsche und Gratulationen überbrachten unter anderem Christina Ezrahi, Mitglied des Beirates der Familie der Werner Siemens-Stiftung, Sibylle Keupen, Oberbürgermeisterin der Stadt Aachen, und Ulrich Rüdiger, Rektor der RWTH Aachen University. Nur ungefähr zehn Prozent der Kunststoffe werden heute rezykliert. Hier setzt catalaix an: Das WSS-Forschungszentrum will mittels chemischen Recyclings, ermöglicht durch die Entwicklung neuartiger Katalysatoren, qualitativ hochwertige Produkte herstellen. «Kunststoffabfall soll zum Wertstoff werden», sagt Jürgen Klankermayer. Eines der grossen Probleme, zu dessen Lösung catalaix beitragen wird, ist die Plastikverschmutzung in den Ozeanen. Welche Ausmasse die Plastikmüllberge im Meer angenommen haben, veranschaulichte Steffen Knodt von der GMT - Gesellschaft für Maritime Technik e.V. Ungefähr zwei Prozent des verbrauchten Plastiks gelangen laut ihm ins Meer, also acht Millionen Tonnen pro Jahr. 2050 werde es ungefähr gleich viel Plastikmüll im Meer haben wie Fische. Unter dem Titel «Weshalb der Planet catalaix braucht» dokumentierte André Bardow von der ETH Zürich, wie enorm die Herausforderung ist, die Plastikindustrie klimaneutral zu machen. Bert Weckhuysen von der Universiteit Utrecht setzte den Schwerpunkt auf die «Raffinerie der Zukunft», bei der chemische Produkte nicht mehr aus Rohöl, sondern aus Plastikabfällen und erneuerbaren Energien hergestellt werden.
