Against the backdrop of the EU simplification agenda, we are moving forward to make sustainability reporting work for companies: We have joined forces with leading food companies in Germany to turn sustainability reporting from a regulatory challenge into a strategic opportunity.  🤝   With funding from the Stiftung Mercator GmbH, our "Making Sustainable Finance Work in Germany" project supports BIO COMPANY SE, followfood, and Terra Naturkost Handels KG in navigating the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and its European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).     ➡️ Together, we are tackling key bottlenecks like double materiality assessments and supply chain data collection, showing that sustainability reporting can improve risk management, create resilient value chains, and unlock access to sustainable finance.     To feed the companies’ experience back into the decision-making process, a high-level Advisory Board is set to support the project. We thank all experts who have already joined the Advisory Board:     Anne Bechmann (Cooperative bank, GLS Bank)   Dr. Susan Krohn (German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, BMUV)   Prof. Andreas Loeschel (Ruhr University Bochum)   Verena Menne (Forum for Sustainable Investment, FNG)   Katrin Peters (Auditing and Tax Consulting Firm, Nexia)   Ulrike Schaal (Federal Association for Organic Food and Natural Goods, BNN)   Prof. Frank Schiemann (University of Bamberg)   Silke Stremlau (Chairwoman of the Sustainable Finance Advisory Board of the German Federal Government)  Katarin Wagner (Forum for Sustainable Development of the German Economy e.V., Econsense)   Armand Zorn (SPD, Member of the German Bundestag)  The members of the Advisory Board will play a vital role in addressing regulatory gaps, overcoming practical challenges, and providing actionable recommendations to enhance regulations and support companies in leveraging sustainability reporting for strategic growth.     The project is set to run until mid-2026. Interested parties can still apply to join the programme.  You can reach out to project lead Dr. Theresa Spandel for further inquiries.   More information: https://lnkd.in/e-xv8xWu   Let’s turn challenges into opportunities for a more sustainable future! 🌍 Fritz Trienekens Raphael Tietmeyer Ingmar Juergens

  • 🔁 How can #Omnibus reap the benefits of the simplification and competitiveness agenda without diluting the ambitions of the EU Green Deal? Next week on the 26 February, the EU Commission is expected to publish its first simplification package. We believe that simplification and coherence can be achieved without compromising our environmental and social goals. A lot of crucial elements of the #CSRD, #CSDDD and #Taxonomy Regulation are at risk. But the simplification package must not derail our sustainability ambitions. On the contrary, we know that sustainability and competitiveness are two sides of the same coin.  🌍 Our joint policy brief with Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union, Brussels presents five recommendations to make the Omnibus a driver of competitiveness and sustainability. First and foremost, we recommend developing unified sector guidelines covering the three files: ➡️ to streamline implementation and increase usability of reported information  ➡️ to simplify the materiality assessments by a sectoral approach  ➡️ and to provide a common language, easier to agree up on at a sector level For all five recommendations check out our policy brief here: https://lnkd.in/eCGx7yEH Thanks to the team at Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union, Brussels for the great collaboration. ✍ Louise Simon Raphael Tietmeyer #CleanIndustrialDeal

📈 Competitiveness compass or 🌱sustainability agenda?   📣These days, calls to roll back environmental regulation dominate the news. But simplification and the #competitiveness agenda must not mean that we lose our environmental ambition.   To the contrary, 2025 must be the year when environmental policy and sustainable finance address the competitiveness concerns of companies and generate business opportunities for SMEs and smallholders along value chains.    🇪🇺 It is possible: at the end of February, the European Commission will present the Clean Industrial Deal and the so-called #Omnibus Simplification Package. These initiatives are (hopefully) aimed at keeping European businesses competitive and Europe in the driving seat of the green transformation, while reducing the administrative effort associated with the Green Deal.    🚨However, there is a risk of “accidentally” sacrificing essential sustainability guard rails for the sake of cutting red tape.    At Climate & Company, we will closely watch these developments. We remain optimistic that it is possible to bridge 📈 competitiveness and🌱sustainability:   1️⃣Sustainability and competitiveness are two sides of the same coin. From our work with SMEs, larger companies and asset managers we have many examples of how simplification can be done without compromising our environmental goals. Many companies turn their sustainability reporting and due diligence into concrete financing opportunities.   2️⃣ Our basic premise: no strong and resilient European economy without addressing the sustainability of its value chains. Strong and competitive businesses understand transparency and disclosure as the necessary means to identify and manage risks and opportunities, sharpen their competitive edge, and capture vital business opportunities.    3️⃣2025 presents a unique opportunity to make sustainability goals our compass to build a strong European economy with stable, resilient value chains for the coming decades. The first months of 2025 are vital to shape the EU policy agenda to deliver on competitiveness and sustainability.     ➡️Here are our ideas on what needs to happen next in 2025 to bridge competitiveness and sustainability: https://lnkd.in/esyGShuY   🔗 Let’s do this together: We look forward to working together with you in 2025 to capture these opportunities and avert the risks of sacrificing the green agenda - with our briefings, workshops, data analysis and support we are here to do it together.   Are you on board?     #competitivenes #valuechains #sustainablefinance #omnibus Ingmar Juergens Dr. Theresa Spandel Dr. Elisabeth Hoch Raphael Tietmeyer Louise Simon
