DigiTechPort2030 team recently had the opportunity to gain insight into the world of cranes 🏗️👀💡 At Liebherr Maritime Cranes' Rostock site, the researchers learned more about the drive types of land-based cranes. 👉 What does a greener future for small and medium-sized ports look like? This is the central question being asked within the EU-funded “DigiTechPort2030” project. After all, there are many ways to reduce CO2 emissions, particularly in logistics within ports. Instead of just talking about it in theory, the project consortium from the South Baltic region was told at the beginning of December 2024: “Get safety boots and safety jackets”. During a study visit to Rostock, they not only gained an insight into the port itself, but also had the opportunity to learn more about port cranes, their manufacture and the demand from ports thanks to an invitation from Liebherr Maritim Cranes. 👉 Let’s talk about mobile cranes The largest land-based crane in the Baltic region stands impressively in the plant in Rostock harbor. The TCC can lift up to 1,600 tons. However, the focus was more on the company's mobile cranes. They are often used in small and medium-sized ports because they offer a wide range of possible applications. In addition to a detailed tour of Liebherr's production facilities, a visit to the crane simulator and even a demonstration of a crane, there was plenty of time to discuss the future of mobile cranes. Liebherr is also working towards a greener future. “Decarbonization is a big topic worldwide. It is particularly high on the agenda in North America and Europe,” says Andreas Ritschel, General Manager of the Sales Department for mobile harbor cranes at Liebherr, assessing the situation. In the meantime, the demand for electrified cranes instead of diesel-powered cranes has risen by around 300 percent. According to Ritschel, the ports themselves are motivated to significantly reduce their CO2 emissions. 👉 Exploring the Port of Rostock During a tour of the Port of Rostock, the researchers also learned specific facts about the port of Rostock. Large pipes for offshore wind turbines are manufactured and shipped onsite. Some of the pipes are loaded onto ships using the powerful TCC on Liebherr's premises. The first fully electrified Liebherr LPS 420E crane in Germany was set up in the port of Rostock. All of the LPS420E's sections are powered by electricity. This could be the future for some of the small and medium-sized ports. Big thanks to Geertje Wehry and Hohschule Wismar for the wonderful summary and pictures! 👏👏👏 #maritime #transport #electrification #decarbonization #sustainability 💡 #DigiTechPort2030 is funded by the Interreg South Baltic Programme 💡 #DigiTechPort2030 project partners: Hochschule Wismar Klaipeda Science and Technology Park Motus Foundation Blekinge Institute of Technology Maritime University of Szczecin #ElblagSeaPortAuthority Klaipėdos uostas/Port of Klaipėda Euro Terminal Ltd.
