We recently launched ReSidual, a new research project funded by the Klimaschutzstiftung Baden-Württemberg! ReSidual explores how digital technologies like artificial intelligence and robotic fabrication can transform waste wood from timber production into load-bearing components. By combining wood with building clay, we aim to further reduce the need for wood, promoting a more sustainable and circular approach to construction. The project is a collaboration between: - DDF - Professur Digital Design and Fabrication (T.T. Prof Moritz Dörstelmann)  - KIT Professorship for Timber and Building Construction (KIT Holzbau und Baukonstruktion) (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Philipp Dietsch)  - Industry partner GROPYUS  Over the coming months, we will research and evaluate the structural and architectural potential of this innovative clay-wood composite as a sustainable alternative to wood-concrete ceilings. A little throwback to #ACADIA 2024, where I had the opportunity to present our paper, “Digital Upcycling: Transforming Waste Wood for Circular Construction through Digital Strategies”, which was honored with the #BestPaperAward.   Co-authored with Vincent Witt, Javier Fuentes Quijano, and Moritz Dörstelmann, the paper reflects our research at the DDF - Professur Digital Design and Fabrication at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Our work focuses on how digital design technologies can help implement waste wood in construction and enable circular processes to support a more sustainable future.   It was great to reconnect with familiar faces, meet new people, and engage in inspiring conversations about the future of construction. A few weeks ago, DDF - Professur Digital Design and Fabrication had the opportunity to host a workshop at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, exploring the robotic fabrication of willow construction components. Building on our previous work, this experience showcased the ongoing potential of natural materials through digital fabrication, demonstrating how traditional craftsmanship can inspire and enhance modern architectural innovation. The week-long workshop concluded with a lecture by DDF’s Tenure-Track Prof. Moritz Dörstelmann, who shared insights into our research. What is TerraTimber? An innovative method for the digital upcycling of waste wood to create circular construction systems enabling the sustainable transformation of reclaimed materials into structural elements. This approach utilizes computational tools and Augmented Reality (AR) fabrication processes to manage the complexity of diverse, non-standard waste wood materials. Starting from the generation of digital inventories through image processing, the wood pieces are then computationally assembled into large structural elements, which are finally physically assembled with nails made of wood and with the aid of AR. 🎉 On October 21, 2024, the award ceremony for the "Innovationspreis Lehmbau BW" (Earth Construction Innovation Prize Baden-Württemberg), hosted by the Baden-Württemberg's Ministry for Regional Development and Housing (Ministerium für Landesentwicklung und Wohnen Baden-Württemberg), took place at the Reute Monastery in Bad Waldsee.
