AI once again took center stage at this year’s Web Summit, sparking conversations about its potential and the uncertainties surrounding its integration into society. We’re proud to have sent a DEEP Ecosystems delegation, led by Ana Wadovski, to actively participate in these discussions. From the Government and People Summit to countless exchanges with ecosystem builders, governments, and startups, our delegation played a vital role in exploring how to bridge gaps and drive impactful innovation across borders. As these global conversations continue, collaboration remains key. How can we work together to address the challenges of AI while fostering trust and innovation?
AI was the theme at Web Summit—again. It was everywhere—every panel, every industry, every buzzword bingo card. Yet, despite the endless discussions, it feels like we’re still circling the same questions without landing on anything truly groundbreaking. As ecosystem builders, the presence of our DEEP Ecosystems delegation at Web Summit was vital to understanding how governments, startups, and stakeholders are addressing these AI challenges—enabling us to bridge gaps, catalyze collaboration, build trust, and drive sustainable, impactful innovation across borders. I chose to focus on the Government and People Summit, a natural fit given our work at ESG Lake with impact-driven projects and public funding initiatives. [ Attending panels at Web Summit is always a challenge—the sheer size of the event means you can't be everywhere at once 😅 . ] Even the much-anticipated panel on the EU AI Act avoided diving into tangible implementation details. Instead, the discussion revolved around how the Act predates the AI explosion, aiming not to stifle innovation but to serve as a living document of 'best practices'. Comparisons were drawn between regulatory approaches globally, with the U.S. described as a patchwork of state-by-state rules, while Europe attempts to implement a more unified—but still evolving—framework. What struck me most was the lingering uncertainty, even among policymakers, about how AI will ultimately integrate into society. This sentiment was echoed during the opening speech, where Portugal’s Prime Minister discussed the nation’s new AI program - a LLM model to preserve their language and culture -, highlighting its potential to reshape our economy and governance while acknowledging the vast unknowns.
