Interested in the intersection of AI and Social Protection Delivery Systems? Today, I had the opportunity to discuss this evolving space with experts from the International Labour Organization, Asian Development Bank (ADB), DATAPREV, and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH during the AI & Social Protection webinar hosted by socialprotection.org. Key messages I conveyed during the discussion: 🔹 AI adoption is advancing rapidly across sectors like health, education, and tax administration—and Social Protection is not far behind. 🔹 Countries are already experimenting with AI-driven solutions. For example, Ghana is using AI for nutrition tracking and dietary needs assessments. 🔹 While AI has a significant potential for SP, we must avoid a solution-first approach. We should focus on identify the challenges and their root causes first -- are they due to policy gaps or weak procedures? Is AI is the right tool or maybe just improvement in the policy/procedures. AI can’t fix structural issues. 🔹 A practical starting point is to focus on low-hanging fruit where AI can improve the efficiency of the back-off/admin efficiency aspects—like using AI to classify grievances or tailor communication—while building infrastructure and framework on how to use AI safely and responsibility. This is just the beginning of an important conversation on how AI can enhance social protection while ensuring ethical, inclusive, and effective implementation. 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗹 🇳🇵 As part of DCI’s training initiatives, a study tour recently took place in 𝗡𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗹. Delegations from 🇸🇳 Senegal (ICAMO & DPS), 🇪🇹 Ethiopia (EHIS), and 🇿🇲 Zambia (NHIMA) explored Nepal's successful implementation of openIMIS across social protection and health insurance programs. This collaborative effort focused on three key areas: 🔸 showcasing openIMIS implementation 🔸 gathering functional requirements for implementing countries 🔸 contributing to the development of global openIMIS solutions 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 Many ongoing implementations of openIMIS are focused on use cases within formal sector settings. While openIMIS offers functionality for beneficiary and employer management, customization is often needed for country-specific requirements. The openIMIS community acknowledges the uniqueness of each implementation but believes that common business processes can be identified and elaborated upon.   The week-long tour allowed the delegations to draw parallels to the specific situations of their countries, which will assist them in customizing, configuring, and deploying openIMIS effectively. They began with site visits to see openIMIS in action, followed by workshops to agree on a common set of business process requirements related to the formal sector. The tour was designed and implemented in partnership with International Labour Organization (ILO), openIMIS, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, and Expertise France. We are excited to announce that the Digital Convergence Initiative (DCI) has officially released Version 1.0.0 of the #DisabilityRegistry (DR) and #SocialProtection Systems (SP-Systems) interoperability standards! 🔗https://lnkd.in/d-t6iXKJ The interoperability standards have received endorsement from the USP2030 Partnership on a no objection basis.   These new interoperability standards for the disability registry interface are designed to make data sharing between disability registries and Social Protection Systems (SP-Systems) smoother and more efficient. This important development is the result of months of dedicated research, collaboration, and careful review, all aimed at making a real difference. Creating these standards is a key step toward enhancing the delivery of social protection programs for persons with disabilities, ensuring they receive the support they need more effectively.
