Info

Space travel. Inspiring. Europe. We’re the DLR Space Applications Institute mbH – the DLR GfR for short. From the Galileo Control Center in Operpfaffenhofen near Munich, we monitor the operation of Galileo – the European global satellite navigation, timing, and positioning system. Galileo is the only satellite navigation system of its kind under civil control – and it’s the most precise, too. On behalf of the European Commission, we head up all the tasks that ensure the secure and error-free operation of the mission. Something over 1.4 billion smartphone users rely upon each and every day. Our services cover everything you’ll need for a successful satellite mission – from the very first idea to way beyond the launch. Both in orbit and on Earth. Two ground control stations, 28 satellites, 24-hour service and 99.9% availability. And all of it can only be made possible thanks to our strong, dedicated team. For over a decade now, it’s been the passionate driving force behind our projects.

DLR GfR at the BDLi General Meeting 2024 🚀 This week, DLR GfR mbH, represented by Managing Director Walter Päffgen, had the privilege of joining the BDLi (BDLI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Luft- und Raumfahrtindustrie e.V.) for their annual general meeting and reception in Berlin. Exciting discussions took place around the future of European space capabilities. A key moment of the event was the insightful speech by German Federal Minister of Defence, Boris Pistorius, who emphasized Germany's growing responsibility as the largest European entity among the #NATO partners. 🇩🇪 The discussions of the day further centered around the critical topics shaping the future of the German aerospace and defence industries, particularly in 2025: A major highlight of the event was the shared commitment to strengthening European sovereignty in space through significant investments in critical space technologies. With global competition increasing, the need to enhance Europe’s technological leadership in space is more urgent than ever. The discussions underscored how targeted investments in research and development can propel emissions-free propulsion concepts and ensure Europe remains at the forefront of innovation in space. Thank you to Marie-Christine von Hahn, Mirja Schüller and their entire team for organizing such an exceptional event and creating a plattform for exchanges at such a high level. DLR GfR is proud to be part of this important dialogue and looks forward to continuing those conversations with industry partners to shape the future of space and navigation. #NavigatingTheFuture #SatelliteNavigation Image credits: BDLi/Julia Baumgart

Yesterday, the upcoming Galileo Emergency Warning Satellite Service (EWSS) was successfully tested in Bucharest. In collaboration with the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations of Romania (IGSU), we demonstrated how this service would function in real-life scenarios.   Using a simulated flood scenario in a designated region, IGSU showcased the capabilities of the EWSS pilot platform, developed by the #EUSpace Programme. The demonstration illustrated how an alert, identified by the National Civil Protection Authority, is sent to smartphones located in the targeted area. Once the message was released by the National Authority, Galileo infrastructure broadcast it and triggered the smartphone alert to notify the population in the affected zone.   The participants saw the content of the alert messages and how fast they were received. The demonstration also included the reception of a follow-up message confirming the end of the crisis.   Galileo EWSS will offer a major advantage in crises and hazard management, and it will remain available when other Early Warning Systems like mobile networks are congested, disrupted, or even destroyed. The service is currently under development and testing by DG DEFIS and EUSPA. Romanian Space Agency Eurisy EU Space

Throwing it back to a pivotal moment in the GNSS History - The First Galileo system test in Oberpfaffenhofen 15 years ago 🛰️ 🇪🇺 🌍   Back in November 2009, a significant moment in satellite navigation history unfolded at the Galileo Control Center in Oberpfaffenhofen: the first system validation tests for the #GALILEO satellite system. These tests marked the beginning of the operational validation journey that would pave the way for the successful launch of the first Galileo satellites in 2011.   For the first time, the interaction between the satellite, still on the ground, and the corresponding ground infrastructure was tested, ensuring the satellite's safe operation throughout its life in orbit. This was part of a series of tests that validated the entire system, setting the stage for future satellite launches and their operations.   The tests involved close collaboration with teams from the European Space Agency - ESA's European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt and Centre National d'Études Spatiales in Toulouse. Together, they successfully conducted the first interconnection between the satellite’s ground and space segments, checking all key functions and systems—everything from satellite communication to altitude control. The teams tested different functions, signals, and instructions, including the operational procedures in the LEOP phase right after launch. Over two days, the teams verified everything, from the communication between the ground segment and the satellite, to power supply, on-board computers, drive systems, and orbit/altitude control systems. The satellite database was also validated with the associated procedures, ensuring all systems worked as expected. All tests were completed successfully. #NavigatingTheFuture #Throwback #GNSS #GalileoControlCenter EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme

Celebrating 15 Years of Spaceopal While spaceopal GmbH kicked off its 15th anniversary celebrations a few weeks ago in Milan already, today, on November 25, we take this moment to recognize an official cornerstone of this impactful partnership. On this day in 2009, a new chapter in satellite navigation began with the notarial establishment of spaceopal GmbH, a joint venture between DLR GfR mbH and Telespazio S.p.A.. This partnership marked the beginning of a powerful collaboration to support the complex operations of Europe’s #GALILEO satellite navigation system. The notarial establishment of Spaceopal was signed by Wolfgang Kohn and Walter Päffgen on behalf of DLR GfR, alongside Vittorio Colella Albino and Corrado Saporito for Telespazio. The company's name, a fusion of "Operations and Logistics" and the precious gemstone opal, symbolized the valuable contribution both companies would bring to the future of satellite navigation. 🇩🇪 🤝 🇮🇹 for 🇪🇺 Over the past 15 years, Spaceopal has been instrumental in ensuring the stable operation of Galileo by overseeing the control and surveillance of 30 satellites in orbit, connected to a global network of antennas. With each partner holding a 50% stake, the collaboration between DLR GfR and Telespazio has played a key role in the success of the Galileo project. Cheers to 15 years, spaceopal GmbH – And many more yet to come 🎉 #NavigatingTheFutureTogether #DLRGfRHistoryChannel #GNSS
