Thirty Rohingya refugees gathered this Tuesday at one of our partner Young Power in Social Action (YPSA)’s listener clubs in the Bangladeshi district of Cox’s Bazar to meet with International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan.   At the Kutupalong camp, refugees and locals produce a weekly radio show, "Palonger Hota" (Voice of Palong), and discuss it in listener groups. Local volunteers produce program content on everyday matters within the camps and nearby villages. Due to the Rohingya's low literacy rate, especially among women, radio is an important medium for spreading information. The program broadcasts on the state radio station Bangladesh Betar and is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).   At the meeting they discussed Khan’s interview with the show's community reporters more than a year ago and the progress of the ongoing investigation into the atrocities that caused the Rohingya's mass-exodus from neighboring Myanmar in 2017. On Wednesday, Khan filed an application for an arrest warrant for Senior General and Acting President Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Defence Services, based on the belief that he “bears criminal responsibility for the crimes against humanity of deportation and persecution of the Rohingya, committed in Myanmar, and in part in Bangladesh.”   “Media, such as your radio program, have the power to connect large groups of Rohingya and Bangladeshi people at one time,” Khan said, “to inform the international community and people who can play a good role to give justice to the Rohingya."

On Dec. 7, Ghana will hold a national election, it's eighth one since a civilian government followed military rule in 1992. Since last month, DW Akademie has been training reporters in using #medialiteracy skills to detect disinformation and propaganda and also mobile journalism to meet deadlines more easily while reporting on the road.   As the workshop participants fan out across the country in the coming days, they recognize the pitfalls of election coverage and yet feel well-prepared.   “The credibility of journalists,” observed freelance journalist Fordjour Abdul Somed Yeboah, “is also at stake in this year’s election.” With funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), DW Akademie works together with Penplusbytes to spread media and information literacy in Ghana, promoting critical thinking and greater security in the digital space. Together with the Media Foundation for West Africa(MFWA) and its journalism project, The Fourth Estate, DW Akademie seeks to strengthen a public dialogue that rests on fact-based, balanced reporting in Ghana. DW Akademie’s (Re-)Claiming Spaces is an initiative to develop creative ideas that improve rural women’s access to relevant information and strengthen their participation in public discourse. With a multi-layered approach, social innovators can develop and pitch their ideas for empowering women in rural East Africa. Two participants, Birhan Gebrekirstos Mezgbo and Joan Rispa Kiragu, are using their creativity and drive to empower women faced with #genderbasedviolence. The "(Re-)Claiming Spaces" was implemented by DW Akademie in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia and was funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Individuals with disabilities in Tunisia face discrimination and bullying, particularly online, reflecting a broader societal issue that perpetuates stigma and marginalization. The #LoveIt_Safe campaign collaborates with media professionals, social media users and influencers, including those with disabilities, to dismantle stereotypes and spread awareness.    The Association Ibsar Loisirs et Cultures pour les Non et Mal-voyants is also working with the Tunisian government to push for stronger laws against hate speech toward people with disabilities online. Supported by DW Akademie's “Digital Innovations for Peace” project, funded by the European Union and the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany, the campaign uses storytelling, advocacy and media engagement to combat systemic discrimination and catalyze societal change.
