The European Union has intensified its action against #subsidies from foreign governments. #China is at the centre of this. The declared aim is to maintain a level playing field in EU markets. In this interview with 20Minds our directors Elżbieta Głowicka and Anselm Mattes give their views on whether foreign subsidies are more of a benefit or more of a threat. #FSR

*** Foreign Subsidies: Benefit or Threat? *** The EU is stepping up enforcement against foreign subsidies to ensure fair competition in its internal market. But are these measures a necessary safeguard, or do they come at too high a cost? We spoke with Elżbieta Głowicka and Anselm Mattes from E.CA Economics about when and how #subsidies distort competition, impact domestic industries, and reshape global trade policy. Key Takeaways: --> Short-Term Benefits vs. Long-Term Risks – Foreign subsidies can lower #prices and benefit consumers in the short term but may undermine domestic industries and economic resilience over time. --> Regulatory Response & Market Impact – Measures like anti-subsidy investigations and the EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation aim to reduce distortions, but they increase bureaucratic costs and could trigger foreign retaliation. --> A Fragmented Trade System – With the #WTO dispute resolution mechanism weakened, unilateral subsidy controls are becoming the preferred tool—but they add complexity and risk fragmenting global trade further. Elżbieta and Anselm break down the economic #trade-offs, policy responses, and alternative approaches that could help balance competition, investment, and market stability.
