Croatia’s media landscape is facing a crisis. Journalists are being targeted through: ⚖️ Legal threats – #SLAPPs weaponised against investigative reporters 📢 Political interference – Attempts to control narratives and restrict information 💰 Economic precarity – Journalists working in unstable conditions with limited protections The latest MFRR report paints a concerning picture: press freedom is stagnating, media pluralism is under strain, and independent journalism is becoming increasingly difficult. How can #Croatia move forward? What legal and policy changes are needed to restore media independence and protect journalists? Join us on 24 February at 12:00 CET for a deep dive into these pressing issues: https://lnkd.in/eyAb9T2n

European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) hat dies direkt geteilt
Investigative outlet Danwatch is being targeted with abusive legal letters bearing the hallmarks of #SLAPPs after a joint investigation with the Financial Times into Ingosstrakh, a Russian insurance company, and its role in insuring oil vessels suspected of helping Russia evade Western sanctions. I traveled to Copenhagen to meet with Danwatch director and editor-in-chief Jesper Nymark to join forces in fighting these legal threats. We at the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) & Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) have documented these threats on our Mapping Media Freedom platform and CoE Media Freedom Platform https://lnkd.in/eq9RDuFZ. We have also provided legal support and will continue to monitor the case. We stand with Danwatch and its dedicated team of investigative journalists. Read our support statement here. https://lnkd.in/e8cEr8pG #Stop #SLAPPs

🔴 SLAPP Alert: Danish media outlet Danwatch faces legal threats for exposing Russian sanctions violations: https://lnkd.in/gcbS7msd Ingosstrakh, a Russian insurer sanctioned by the US and UK, has sent multiple legal threats to Danwatch via Moscow-based law firm ELWI over an investigative report uncovering risks posed by oil tankers operating in violation of sanctions. Why this matters: 🔹Legal intimidation – Danwatch is being pressured to reveal confidential sources. 🔹Chilling effect – Threats aim to silence critical investigative reporting. 🔹EU response needed – This case highlights the urgent need for robust anti-SLAPP protections. We stand with Danwatch and call on Ingosstrakh and ELWI to withdraw their legal threats immediately: https://lnkd.in/gcbS7msd

The sudden suspension of USAID funding has left Ukrainian media in a precarious position, with many outlets losing the majority of their financial support. But as we discussed with Olga Myrovych (Lviv Media Forum), the response from Ukrainian journalists has been remarkable. Key takeaways from our conversation: 🔹 Resilience – Ukrainian media have faced multiple crises: war, COVID, and now this funding cut. They continue to adapt. 🔹 Innovation – Outlets are exploring alternative revenue models, from reader-funded journalism to new business ventures. 🔹 New risks – With traditional funding sources disappearing, there’s growing concern about politically motivated financing from foreign actors. The big question: Will Ukrainian media find sustainable solutions before it’s too late? Watch our full discussion with Olga Myrovych to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eShYyNxQ
