Developing raw materials into a major strength for Europe 🇪🇺 #ConnectingMatters

Info

Minerals, metals and advanced materials are key enablers to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal. Today, only a fraction of the most relevant raw materials is produced in Europe. This can be changed through a circular economy approach, through innovation in recycling, substitution, processing, mining, and exploration. It is the objective of EIT RawMaterials to secure a sustainable raw materials supply by driving innovation, education, and entrepreneurship across European industrial ecosystems. EIT RawMaterials provides a collaborative environment for disruptive and breakthrough innovations by connecting business with academia, research, and investment. It also invests in future generation of innovators for the raw materials sector through initiatives ranging from education of school students to higher qualifications for industry professionals. The company is committed to supporting Europe’s transition towards a circular, green, and digital economy whilst strengthening its global competitiveness and securing employment. On this foundation, EIT RawMaterials has been mandated by the European Commission to lead and manage the European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA). EIT RawMaterials is an Innovation Community within the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).

🌍 A New Era for Europe’s Competitiveness: Welcome to the New European Commission Today marks the beginning of a transformative chapter for Europe. On behalf of EIT RawMaterials, I warmly congratulate President Ursula von der Leyen and extend a heartfelt welcome to the newly appointed College of Commissioners. The ambitious programme presented today in Strasbourg outlines a bold vision for a Europe that is ready to compete, innovate, and lead in an increasingly complex global landscape. As President von der Leyen rightly stated, “Our freedom and sovereignty depend more than ever on our economic strength. Our security depends on our ability to compete, innovate, and produce.” At EIT RawMaterials, we couldn’t agree more. ⚙️ Raw materials are not just the backbone of Europe’s industrial ecosystems - they are the nucleus of our competitiveness and innovation, enabling the green and digital transitions that are at the core of the EU’s strategic agenda. The new Competitiveness Compass underscores this by placing critical raw materials at the center of Europe’s broader security, economic, and industrial priorities. 📈 With global demand for critical raw materials expected to triple by the end of this Commission’s mandate, ensuring sustainable and resilient supply chains is a top priority. We applaud the focus on reducing dependencies, fostering strategic partnerships, and advancing circular economy practices -ä essential measures to strengthen Europe’s sovereignty while boosting its global competitiveness. 🌐 The clear commitment to free and fair trade, coupled with prioritizing critical materials, sets the tone for action. As President von der Leyen declared, “European sovereignty is not for sale.” This powerful message aligns perfectly with our mission at EIT RawMaterials: advancing sustainable innovation and ensuring the raw materials sector supports Europe’s industrial leadership.   At EIT RawMaterials, we stand ready to support the Commission’s ambitious goals. Together with our partners, we will: ✔️ Drive innovation to secure sustainable supply chains. ✔️ Foster solutions to close the innovation gap. ✔️ Empower the transition to a net-zero economy. ✔️ Strengthen Europe’s industrial ecosystems through resilience and collaboration.   Congratulations again to President von der Leyen and the College of Commissioners. We look forward to working together to make Europe stronger, greener, and more competitive for future generations. 💪🌍   #EuropeanCommission #CriticalRawMaterials #Competitiveness #Innovation #Sustainability #Decarbonization #Security #CircularEconomy #EITRawMaterials #TogetherForEurope #GreenTransition

Vanadium is crucial to Europe’s green transition and industrial future and is recognised by the EU as one of its 34 critical raw materials.    It plays a key role in strengthening steel for construction, powering Vanadium Flow Batteries for renewable energy storage, and driving innovation in aerospace and emerging technologies. But Europe relies heavily on imports to meet demand. That’s why we’re proud to support Novana, a groundbreaking project revolutionising how vanadium is produced.     By repurposing steel slag from industry leaders like SSAB and Salzgitter AG, Novana creates carbon-neutral, high-purity vanadium pentoxide while capturing CO2 in the process.     This innovative approach will help secure a sustainable vanadium supply for Europe while potentially reducing up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions over the next decade.    For more information, visit: https://novana.fi/   #Sustainability #CriticalRawMaterials #Innovation #CircularEconomy #GreenTransition #Vanadium

The steel industry is essential to Europe’s economy, underpinning sectors like automotive, construction, and renewable energy. However, Europe’s steel sector is facing severe pressures—skyrocketing energy costs, high production expenses, and intense global competition, as highlighted by Judith Kirton-Darling, General Secretary of industriAll Europe. These challenges, paired with ambitious low-carbon targets, have led to a decline in European steel consumption, putting the industry’s future in jeopardy. Europe’s steel sector is not just an industry; it’s a critical component of Europe's strategic autonomy and climate goals. Without decisive, coordinated action, Europe risks losing its steel capacity and the expertise and innovation that support the entire industrial chain. In this OpEd, Judith Kirton-Darling urges the need for a European Steel Action Plan and a comprehensive European Industrial Deal. These are the priorities to support a resilient and sustainable steel industry: ✳ Green Steel Market Creation: Leveraging public procurement to support demand for low-carbon, European-made steel. ✳ Affordable Clean Energy: Advocating for urgent reform in the electricity market to make clean energy available and affordable for steelmakers. ✳ Public-Private Investment: Strengthening partnerships with impactful social and environmental benefits, ensuring the investment reaches the workers and communities who rely on this industry.
