Organisations are realising that the process of ESG Reporting has impacts, and some of them are profound. It all starts with putting past activities into focus. Baseline year analysis creates a then and now sense of evolution, it’s a way of seeing our legacy in a different way, whether for better or worse, and Boom! we can see our dependencies. Life was so much easier believing that everything could just keep growing, that ‘more’ was entirely reasonable. Seeing the world through our dependencies brings a harsh reality home; that only more is not sustainable, nor desirable. STAGE 1: This gives rise to new perspectives and with them comes greater vision. Time to go back to the CEO and explain that your brand integrity has some clouds on the horizon. You are going to need to drop the old-line myopic and start embracing responsibility, it’s either that or being called out for the wrong reasons. First, you’ll need a clear, unambiguous statement of intent backed up with real, demonstrable commitment. Change, after all, is the only certainty, and transparency is the new advantage. STAGE 2: Commitment comes next. Time to tackle the elephant in the room that Business-as-Usual represents a death of a thousand cuts. Investors, customers, suppliers and your staff all need assurance that you are capable and willing to change. Secretly they are expecting that you can’t, they are expecting you to fail. Being bold will be unbelievable, being modest will not be enough. Promises need to be based on truth and facts, marketing will struggle with that. STAGE 3: Until they grasp that advocacy and engagement are the best peer-endorsements. Resiliency in all its forms is enhanced through localisation, which just happens to also be the easiest place to establish impact touchpoints. Now is the chance to make your materiality analysis meaningful. STAGE 4: Now you’re getting up a head of steam, you are driving change and no longer on the back foot. The solution(s) you began reporting with needs to broaden to include innovation collaborations and AI to dig into data, to identify nuance and new opportunities. Abstract data needs to become absolute, you’ll never find process redundancy otherwise. STAGE 5: Now you’re delivering. Your ESG reporting has morphed into a transformation management system with progressive targets and positive impact outcomes. You’re growing, but in different ways. You’re creating returns, but in more dimensions. You’ve embraced boundaries and found ways to thrive within them. #sustainability #sustainablebusiness #esg #esgstrategy #esgreporting Joanne Thurlow Steve B. 🌍 We often find that we live in a ‘small world’, it is the same for companies, full of non-linear, often circular connections, just like our daily relationships. Stakeholder engagement is about understanding the interconnectedness of things. 🤯 Mind-mapping is an excellent tool to understand the degrees of influence throughout stakeholder eco-systems, which are dynamic and exhibit their own characteristics. 🤔 Ever wondered why folks don’t send back surveys? personality-types play a big role, as does cognitive bias and decision making abilities, which can place a low priority on other people’s needs. ⁉️ Surveys can be handy, but only after thorough analysis and scoping, then regularly follow up with focus groups. ✅ Piggy back marketing when they hosts these, or increase frequency of community events or sponsorships, and add always ESG topics to client/supplier discussions. ⭐️ Integrate engagement with day to day activities - interconnect function and feedback. So, what is not Stakeholder engagement? ❌ a phone enquiry to see if your customers think you are 'green' or ‘eco' ❌ checking your suppliers website if they are offsetting their GHGe ❌ asking for a hands-up in staff meetings ❌ relying on marketing to substantiate product or service claims ❌ only a tick-box survey sent out every 2 years to a select few 👏 Interconnectedness drives our societies and our businesses, don’t be scared of taking stakeholder engagement seriously! #sustainability #sustainablebusiness #esg #esgstrategy #esgreporting Joanne Thurlow Steve B. 🤔 A Friday thought for you to mull over the weekend and as we approach holiday season... 👣 We all know that tourism has a heavy GHG footprint and many negative social impacts from over-tourism, excessive demands, and irresponsible travellers, but how many of us actually begin our holiday planning by considering them? 💛 Have you made a clear and conscientious choice this summer? Have you explained your decisions to your family? Do you sincerely believe that you will have a better holiday by being responsible and considerate? 😎 I truly hope so, and wherever you chose to go, have fun, share smiles and leave only positive footprints!

🤔 The problem: responsibility is (currently) not a currency of value. Take the article below from the BBC - there are many similar examples of where market constraints have forced a rethink of value - and note that regulation was a vital system lever. 👉 So, do we wait for the market's self-correction to make us operate within planetary boundaries, which it will do eventually (no doubt with ferocity), or do we engage some system leverage? 💡 ESG regulations seek to institutionalise responsibility and induce behavioural change... yet regulations are normally considered an infringement of 'rights' at first. That is until folks understand that effects require causes, thus turning onerous duties into normative functionality. ⚡ Just recall that accounting standards were created out of the Great Depression for this very reason - regulations for investor protection - and that's dear to the heart of every free-market advocate. 😡 So why do some folks find fault with ESG, citing arguments that champion ‘free markets’? I'm afraid they actually mean, ‘hey, anything goes’ or 'I'm too busy' - classic arguments from those attempting to avoid responsibility - I'm sure there are some parents out there who recognise the phrases? 🌍 Let's be clear - ESG seeks to add common-sense, protective measures for the planet and those of us who would like to see future generations not having to deal with decimated biodiversity, planetary pillaging, real estate catastrophes, rampant pollution and totally dysfunctional societies! https://lnkd.in/eDdJw2bT
