ECSA - encourages the growth of citizen science in Europe.
Info
The European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) is a non-profit association set up to encourage the growth of the Citizen Science movement in Europe. It draws on 200 individual and organizational members from over 28 countries across the European Union and beyond. Launched during the EU GREEN WEEK in June 2013, ECSA has grown from an informal network of researchers and communicators interested in Citizen Science into the European reference network of Citizen Science initiatives. ECSA builds on the substantial expertise of its members in order to mobilize Citizen Science as means for evidence-based sustainable development. As spelled out in our strategy, ECSA will conduct research and support refinement of methodologies, increase capacities and develop three interrelated key competencies: - Promoting Sustainability through Citizen Science, - Building a Think Tank for Citizen Science, - Developing Participatory Methods for Cooperation, Empowerment and Impact. Please be sure to adhere to ECSA's social media code of conduct: https://bit.ly/45FBQBz

Just finished an amazing time at the Citizen Science School Rome Technopole at the INFN in partnership with the ECSA - European Citizen Science Association and Citizen Science Italia! Five days where we learnt about what is “Citizen Science” and discussed the projects that have been and are being developed. There were 5 research teams focused on various topics in line with the Spoke 5 “Outreach, public engagement and lifelong learning”: Antibiotic resistance, VR/AR/MR Environments, Dentistry, Digital-physical spaces in prisons, Physics energy and sustainability. I had the opportunity to work on the fifth research line related to Energetic Transition for which we researched how to be more sustainable in our daily lives. Sharing ideas and developing a citizen science project in an international environment encouraged me to think differently about science. Making science more open and accessible is a great and ambitious goal! A big thank you to the coordinators Simona Cerrato, Andrea Sforzi, Alessandro Campanaro, Bruna Gumiero and Andriana Postiglione for their dedication and guidance throughout this experience.

RIECS-Concept launches to build Europe’s first research infrastructure for citizen science Brussels, 30 January 2025 – The RIECS-Concept project (Towards A Pan-European Research Infrastructure For Excellent Citizen Science) has officially launched, marking a major step toward strengthening citizen science in Europe. Co-coordinated by Fundación Ibercivis and ECSA - European Citizen Science Association, the initiative brings together partners from Spain, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Italy, Serbia, Lithuania, and Switzerland to develop a concept for a robust and sustainable research infrastructure that integrates both citizen-contributed and scientific resources. RIECS-Concept will lay the foundation for the world’s first comprehensive infrastructure of its kind, addressing key challenges such as fragmentation of data, projects, platforms and funding and the need for interoperability of resources within the citizen science landscape. The project will deliver two primary outcomes: a conceptual design and feasibility study and a five-year implementation plan, ensuring a structured and sustainable approach to developing this new research infrastructure. At the kickoff meeting in Brussels, project partners, joined by the European Commission’s Project Officer Katharina Buse, discussed key objectives, upcoming tasks, collaboration and long-term strategies. Funded under the HORIZON-INFRA-2024-DEV-01-01 call which supports the development of new concepts for research infrastructures of European interest, RIECS-Concept represents a flagship effort in advancing excellence in participatory research. More details, including project updates and upcoming events, will be shared soon. Follow us on social media and engage with us, as we collaboratively shape the concept of the upcoming research infrastructure for citizen science.
