Qualified lawyer, full-stack software developer and 2x founder. Meet our fellow, Ijeoma Akwiwu. 🇳🇬 Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Ije always wanted to be an engineer. But her dad considered engineering to be a male-dominated field and insisted she pursued a career in law instead. 🧑⚖️ So, she went on to study law at Lagos State University, graduating in the top 1% of her cohort, and then trained at the Nigerian Law School. In 2012, she was called to the Nigerian Bar Association HQ. 🏘️ After spending a 2 years as a legal professional, Ije became involved in a think-tank organised by a NGO in Ajuba which was focused on civic tech. 📈 She first consulted the optimisation of an election management, then lead a project for developing legal-tech to track incidents within the judicial system, raising $1m in funding from the MacArthur Foundation in the process. 🧑💻 From that point forward, Ije knew that she wanted to become a tech founder. In 2021, she decided to leave Nigeria to pursue an MSc in Computer Science at the University of Glasgow. She graduated with a distinction after building a web based litigation filing application for courts for her thesis. 🚀 In the same year, she was accepted into Y Combinator where she co-founded Pivo Africa (YC S22), a fin-tech which provides supply chain financing to businesses. 👏 Within 2 years, Pivo Africa (YC S22) had raised $2.5m in funding, grown its loan portfolio to over $10m and deployed working capital to 2000+ businesses with a 96% repayment rate. 🚀 🚀 Now, Ije is building again with EWOR, ideating an AI-powered Sustainable Finance and Auto-Reporting platform, targeting a $6.61 trillion market. 50 academic abstracts, 35 peer-reviewed publications, 2 bachelors, 1 PhD. Meet our fellow, Dr Saadiq Moledina. 🏥 Saadiq spent a lot of time in hospitals growing up. He would come to visit his grandparents; he would stay to ask about the machinery used to treat them. 📜 In 2009, his childhood interest led him to Imperial College London where he gained a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. 📜 📜 But, whilst at Imperial, Saadiq became obsessed with speaking to clinicians. So, immediately after graduating, he went to University of Cambridge to study medicine - another Bachelor's degree! 🩺 By 2020, Saadiq was a practising cardiology registrar with a funded academic post in the UK (one out of nine), a Member of the Royal College of Physicians and a NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Fellow. 👏 Over the next 3 years, he published 30 peer-reviewed articles in top medical journals including European Heart Journal, Heart (BMJ) and Mayo Clinic Proceedings. But Saadiq wanted to be more than just a clinician or a researcher. He wanted to drive an impact on the industry, rather than just being an actor within it. 🚀 So, in 2022, whilst practising as a cardiologist, he founded Medicamentum UK Ltd, an edtech which improves access to echocardiography for doctors. 👨⚕️ In 2023, he was successfully appointed as one of the National Medical Directors Clinical Fellows in the UK (one of 23) to work on pivotal national policy at the Care Quality Commission. 📜 📜 📜 He completed his PhD in Epidemiology and Medicine in the same year at the University of Cambridge, where his work was shortlisted for one of the top medical national prizes. (Quickest ever PhD in the field?) He is also building something new, this time with EWOR. 🫂 Moreover, he is alumni of one of our treasured partners, BiteLabs Healthtech. Petter Made (Co-Founder @ SumUp) and Quinten Selhorst (Co-Founder @ felyx) are officially joining EWOR as full-time partners! 📈 Petter Made co-founded SumUp, a FinTech now valued at €8 billion, before playing a key role in scaling Drooms to a 9-figure valuation as CPTO.
