Globally, many large scale renewable energy projects are being cancelled during the pre-development phase. How can we ensure these investments succeed? Renewable energy projects face many hurdles including permitting delays, community opposition, financial constraints and regulatory uncertainties - all potentially delaying or cancelling projects. In the US, local ordinances or zoning were the leading cause of wind project cancellations, while grid interconnection was the leading cause for the cancellation of solar projects. To attract renewable energy investments, governments must ensure renewable energy investors of regulatory stability, clear tariff frameworks, and streamlined permitting. Investment promotion agencies can play a key role by bridging the gap between investors and regulatory agencies and by facilitating engagement with local stakeholders to enhance project success. 🖊 Nada Snoussi #FDI #RenewableEnergy #WindPower #SolarPower #ViewfromtheCenter

Although tariffs primarily target the trade of goods and services, they can also influence foreign direct investment flows. FDI Center's Conor Finnegan was asked for a comment on this topic in an article by Investment Monitor. Conor highlighted that Trump’s “move underscores the need for strategic agility and stringent risk mitigation policies for companies navigating the increasingly fragmented global trade landscape." Conor stated that for investment promotion agencies, it will be crucial to help investors implement dual strategies to build geographically diversified supply chains and develop contingency plans for sudden policy shifts. 💭 What are your thoughts and predictions on the impact of Trump's tariffs on global FDI flows? What’s next for Canada after the loss of trust in the U.S. government? With the announcement of 25% tariffs on Canadian exports, followed by retaliatory tariffs from Canada, the urgency to reduce economic reliance on the U.S. has intensified. For over 20 years, the U.S. has been Canada’s largest investor and trading partner — but now, the calls to diversify are becoming louder. Canada has already taken steps to reduce reliance through global trade agreements like the CPTPP and the Canada-EU: Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, strengthening ties with Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the EU. This moment presents a prime opportunity for Canadian federal, provincial, and regional economic development agencies to reassess their investment attraction and export strategies. By leveraging Canada's reputation and global economic connections, they can unlock new sources of FDI and export markets. 🖊 Michael Henderson #Canada #USTariffs #ViewfromtheCenter #FDI

The EU is one of Mercosur's top investors. Will the new EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement unlock new opportunities for FDI? Signed last month, the agreement seeks to deepen economic ties by removing tariffs on over 90% of trade and will not only accelerate accelerate exports but also drive FDI. Key sectors for outbound European FDI into South America include manufacturing, finance, telecom, and increasingly technology and advanced manufacturing. On the other side, Mercosur have made investments in the EU in agriculture, food processing, oil, fintech, engineering, and in mergers and acquisitions. By aligning standards on IP, investor rights, and competition, the agreement is poised to strengthen EU-Mercosur FDI flows. 🖊 Konstantin Jannone #EU #Mercosur #tradeagreement #ViewfromtheCenter
