The Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems is a methodologically oriented Fraunhofer Institute working in the disciplines of materials science and materials engineering. The Fraunhofer IMWS is a point of contact for industry and public service clients on all questions relating to the microstructure of materials and systems. Its aim is to increase material efficiency and conserve resources.
The work of the Fraunhofer IMWS is directed at identifying errors and weak spots in materials, components and systems at the micro and nano scale, explaining how they have arisen and providing solutions for clients based on those findings. The institute's industrial clients include companies from the field of microelectronics and microsystems technology, photovoltaics, plastics engineering, the chemical industry, power engineering, and automotive or aircraft construction. This work goes hand in hand with the further development of methods and tools for microstructure analysis, enabling industrial clients with tailor-made device configurations to identify and avoid sources of error themselves in future.
The microstructural approach of the Fraunhofer IMWS makes it possible to design technology development specific to the material right at the development stage and to customise the functional properties of the components or systems. Apart from the microstructure-based technology development the development of new high throughput screening methods is also of key importance here.
The Fraunhofer IMWS is incorporated in the Weinberg Campus, the second largest scientific campus in East Germany, together with the Martin Luther University Halle Wittenberg and the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics Halle.
The Composite Sandwich Conference took place in #HalleSaale at the end of April. In addition to the professional exchange and the opportunity to network, new fields of application for sandwich materials were discussed, co-organized by the #FraunhoferIMWS.
🎇 With the year 2024 coming to a close we're filled with gratitude for everything that was achieved this year and we are exceptionally proud of our Composite Sandwich Conference CSC2024! We would like to thank everyone involved for their contribution and are hoping to see you all at the CSC 2026! ✨ ❤️
🌟 The year is coming to an end. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our followers! Thank you for the informative exchanges here on LinkedIn. We would also like to thank all of our customers for the trusting and inspiring cooperation this year.
We wish you a wonderful end to the year, a pleasant holiday season 🎄 and a good start to a successful new year in 2025!

➡️ FMD - Forschungsfabrik Mikroelektronik Deutschland is setting up APECS Pilot Line for European semiconductor industry ⬅️
🔔 The FMD has received funding approval to set up a pilot line for “Advanced Packaging and Heterogeneous Integration for Electronic Components and Systems” (#APECS).
As a guest member of the FMD, we at the #FraunhoferIMWS have contributed to the design of the pilot line. The upcoming funding will also enable us to make significant investments that will considerably expand our methodological capabilities in the field of material characterization 🔬 for modern #microelectronic components.
📌 APECS is a key building block of the #EUChipsAct to advance chiplet innovation and increase semiconductor research and manufacturing capabilities in Europe. The total funding for the APECS pilot line is 730 million euros over 4.5 years. APECS is coordinated by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and implemented by the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD).

➡️ Over a period of five years, six Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft institutes combined their expertise in the Fraunhofer lighthouse project “MaNiTU” to identify the most sustainable paths for the market launch of perovskite tandem solar cells. ⬅️
In doing so, they were able to show that high efficiencies can be achieved with industry-related processes. However, high efficiencies could only be achieved with perovskites containing lead. The researchers therefore developed suitable recycling concepts to ensure sustainability.
At the #FraunhoferIMWS, the low-damage focused ion beam technique (#FIB) was used for the preparation of industrial tandem solar cells, which can then be analyzed in high resolution in the transmission electron microscope (#TEM) 🔬.
A special sample holder was constructed that allows the direct deposition of absorber and contact layers on TEM substrates at the project partners' sites. In addition, methods were developed to study the thickness, coverage and chemical bonding of self-assembling molecular monolayers.
