🚀 Exciting things are happening in our ongoing MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) project with the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung! We are improving the efficiency of 3D printing more through early defect detection during the laser powder bed fusion process. By leveraging MVTec’s advanced anomaly detection algorithm, 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗔𝗗, we aim to enhance quality control using the precision of high-resolution imaging. Currently, there are no automated checks in place, and operators only know if the print was successful after it's completed – a process that can take hours and consume significant energy and resources. But here’s how we’re changing the game: 🔍 How it works: After every powder recoating step, an image is taken. Normally, these images look consistent given a particular camera and lighting setup. That’s where EfficientAD comes in: It transforms the process by enabling the detection of deviations at an early stage, up to 200 layers before the critical process event. By flagging any deviations from the norm and alerting operators in real time, this preemptive detection helps avoid costly delays and wasted hours of work. 💡 Our next goal in this project is to implement an object detection algorithm to classify these anomalies into specific defect types in order to further optimize quality control. With this step, we hope to further increase the accuracy and efficiency of the process. What are the benefits of this early defect detection? ✔️ Time and cost savings: Catching defects early means we don’t waste hours of printing time. ✔️ Energy efficiency: Printing is energy-intensive, so detecting issues early saves resources. ✔️ Material savings: Fewer misprints mean less wasted material.
