💸🤓 Famous NIS2 excuses - Part 4: “Getting NIS2 compliant is too expensive!” You know what's more expensive? The consequences of noncompliance: 💥 The average cost of a data breach of European companies: EUR 5 Million. 💥 On top of that, legal fines for NIS2 non-compliance: EUR 10 Million. Or more. 💥 Additionally: MDs can now be held personally liable. Chances are: Implementing NIS2 upgrades is far less of a hassle than the alternative… 🤓

With NIS2 - the new EU security directive - now in effect: We keep hearing a lot of excuses 🧚♂️🤞🏽🧚♂️ ”NIS2-what?” “That can’t apply to us, can it?” "Cybersecurity, schmybersecurity." "NIS2 compliance is way too expensive!" ”We don’t even have time to comply with NIS2!” But ⤵️ Excuses won’t protect your business. Neither your customers. 👩🏻⚖️ Regulators won’t accept ignorance as a defense. 🥷 Bad actors don’t mind if you ‘don’t have time’ for it. In fact, they prefer it. More to come very soon…

Over 20 years ago, I loved going out in Hackney ❤️🔥 It was less gentrified than today. Very urban. And a bit rough... These days, Hackney faces different challenges: Security issues and their endless aftermath 🚨 In 2020, the Hackney Council got breached 👺 288,000 residents were affected: 👎🏼 Systems (which allow residents to pay rent & council tax) were down 🏚️ Property purchases fell through 🗂️ Personal data of residents and staff was leaked Four years later, the council is still addressing the aftermath…⏳ The attack was caused by a "clear and avoidable error" 🤔 As the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) puts it: "Simple mistakes, like having dormant accounts with identical usernames and passwords" 🔑 This is a good reminder: ⚠️ Dormant (inactive) accounts are a major security risk. 🔒 And keeping access down, is the most powerful way to avoid such accounts. Least privilege.
