Enjoy the silence... or the science behind it! Our custom front-array system for the acoustic wind tunnel is designed to capture only the wind noise generated by the airflow around the car. The setup features 216 microphones, covering a frequency range from 500 Hz to 10,000 Hz, along with a 4K camera. With our NoiseImage software, we can zoom in both visually and acoustically to gather the most detailed and precise data possible. 🌬️🚗 If you look closely at 00:28, you’ll notice a person in the corner holding a special fog device for wind tunnels. This technique is used to visualize the airflow above the car, while our #AcousticCamera color-codes the noise into an acoustic map, allowing BMW´s aeroacoustics engineers to pinpoint the exact source of the sound. In addition to the front-array system, a conveniently movable microphone array can be positioned to the left or right side. The system ensures time-synchronized recording of the complete vehicle's exterior noise in a single measurement. This helps to reduce both measurement and analysis time. 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗯𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀? 🏡🚂 Using our #WaveCam vibration analysis solution, we conducted a study at a small railroad house in Germany, just 50 meters from the tracks. This location gave us a opportunity to measure the real impact of passing trains on a building. Using a high-speed Photron camera capable of capturing 500 frames per second and our software running on a laptop, we first recorded the wall movements and then imported the data into #WaveCam for analysis. The software analyzes the movements in the video pixel by pixel, allowing even the smallest vibrations to be amplified and displayed with remarkable clarity and simplicity.The main excitation of the house by the train is visible in the frequency spectrum, represented by the peaks. On the left side, in the section, you can see a section of the house wall and the moving plaster surface corresponding to the selected peak in the spectrum. The redder the field, the stronger the movement. The frequency spectrum on the right initially shows the averaged vibration. Since each pixel in the video represents its own sensor (similar to an acceleration sensor), one can explicitly select it and illustrate its direction of movement using arrows for clarification. Through this method, differences in amplitudes and phases compared to the average can be very well represented. This allows one to observe whether, compared to the average, there are higher vibrational movements at individual structurally significant points The most striking discovery? Freight trains cause significantly higher vibrations compared to high-speed ICE trains, even at similar frequencies. This finding highlights WaveCam's ability to pinpoint subtle yet critical differences in vibration patterns. This kind of detailed analysis is essential for designing homes and infrastructure that can withstand the forces caused by nearby train traffic. It’s another example of how WaveCam supports engineers, architects, and urban planners in creating safer and more durable structures. During their tour, participants stopped by our station on sound and vibration analysis, where they explored the capabilities of our Acoustic Cameras. We explained the principles of sound localization and showcased our microphone arrays, including our two all-on-one soundcameras #Mikado ans #Octagon as well as the custom-built Flexstar120 AC Pro. A live demonstration highlighted our system’s real-time analysis capabilities, showcasing how it identifies and separates sound sources across different frequency ranges. As a final highlight, we presented an acoustic film from a previous measurement on a banknote counting and sorting machine. The automotive industry is constantly trying to enhance performance, safety and comfort. In order to do so they need to know how car components behave under stress—and that's where deformation dynamics come into play. Deformation dynamics focus on how materials and structures, such as car doors and tires, respond to forces during operation.
