Es war mir eine Freude, zusammen mit unserem Präsidenten Roger Crotti im Rahmen des Events ,Hollywood an der Limmat‘ 50 Unternehmern aus Deutschland und der Schweiz das Zurich Film Festival vorzustellen und ihnen den für 8 Oscars nominierten Film CONCLAVE zu zeigen, den Regisseur Edward Berger und Hauptdarsteller Ralph Fiennes am ZFF vorgestellt hatten. CONCLAVE ist mein persönlicher Oscar-Favorit - ein Film, der Einblick in die Machtkämpfe des Vatikans gibt und mit grossartigen Schauspielleistungen besticht. As Saudi Arabia undergoes rapid transformation under the framework of Vision 2030 and the ambitious leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), the Kingdom is asserting itself as a pivotal player in the Middle East and beyond. Just last month, Saudi Arabia was selected to host the 2034 World Cup; a decision that aligns with its goal to enhance global standing. Vision 2030 is also reshaping the country through mega-projects such as the smart-city NEOM and initiatives aimed at boosting sectors like tourism, renewable energy, and technology. However, this vision has also faced challenges, including global investor skepticism about the feasibility of such projects and persistent economic dependence on oil revenues amid market volatility. At the same time, the significant social reforms – including the expansion of women's rights or the loosening of restrictions on entertainment - have sparked resistance among conservative segments of the population, creating a complex environment for reform. These domestic efforts are unfolding amid evolving regional alliances, such as recent normalization talks with Israel or the rather cautious rapprochement with Iran, as well as strategic partnerships with global powers like the United States and China. On January 30, we will delve into Saudi Arabia’s transformative journey and its implications for the region and the world. Ahead of our Study Trip to the Kingdom in April, we are excited to host Dr. Sebastian Sons from the Center for Applied Research in Partnership with the Orient (CARPO) as well as Emily G., Correspondent of Deutsche Welle in Jerusalem. Together, we will analyze MBS’ balancing act between economic modernization and political conservatism, as well as the implications of these changes for the wider region: What role does Saudi Arabia play in shaping the future of the Middle East? How is it managing internal pressures while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics? What opportunities and challenges might arise for international collaboration and investment? We are looking forward to this highly interesting and insightful event! 

Zum Abschluss eines spannenden und erfolgreichen Jahres für Global Bridges, ist es uns eine besondere Freude, heute Abend zahlreiche unserer Mitglieder in Berlin willkommen zu heißen. Das jährliche Christmas Dinner bietet neben einer weihnachtlichen Speiseauswahl auch die Gelegenheit, das Jahr und die vielen interessanten Begegnungen, Erfahrungen sowie Erkenntnisse Revue passieren zu lassen. Als Redner für diesen besonderen Anlass konnten wir den ehemaligen Vorsitzenden des Vorstands der Deutschen Bank, Dr. Josef Ackermann, gewinnen. Im Dialog mit Nora Müller, Leiterin des Bereichs Internationale Politik sowie des Hauptstadtbüros der Körber-Stiftung, wird er über sein aktuelles Buch – „Mein Weg" – sprechen. Uns erwarten spannende Ausführungen zur praktischen Finanzmarktökonomik sowie ihrer Transformation seit den späten 1970er-Jahren und ein einmaliger Blick „hinter die Kulissen“ jener dramatischen Wochen der Finanzkrise 2008/9, in denen Dr. Ackermann dazu beitrug, einen globalen Finanzkollaps zu verhindern.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation from Global Bridges, a non-profit, non-partisan organisation based in Berlin. Comprising 35 distinguished representatives from politics, business, academia, and media, the delegation explored key aspects of Hong Kong’s political and economic landscape and gained insights into major urban development initiatives like the Northern Metropolis.   We began on Thursday with an in-depth morning briefing by Stefan Bredohl, German Consulate General Hong Kong, and our Delegate Hannes Farlock. On Saturday, we continued at City Gallery with a guided tour and presentation on the Northern Metropolis development plan. Following this introduction, participants had the opportunity to see first-hand how Hong Kong’s ambitious plan for future growth is starting to take shape during an excursion to the development site in the New Territories. The engaging visit highlighted our shared commitment to building cross-border connections and fostering exchange between Germany and Hong Kong. Members of Global Bridges, a Berlin-based organization dedicated to dialogue and international experiences, visited Hesai's R&D and manufacturing center in Shanghai this week. Hesai CEO Yifan Li shared his vision for the future of cooperation between China and Germany, including ➡ Hesai's unique strengths in the global lidar market ➡ Germany's strong automotive legacy and China's rapidly advancing EV expertise ➡ The importance of this cooperation between China and Germany to solve modern-day challenges with advanced technology This was an excellent opportunity to meet new friends and learn from each other!
