📢 Best practice alert - Media Ownership Transparency 🔍 The Audiovisual Council of Moldova (Consiliul Audioviziualului) together with the Global Media Registry and the Media Guard NGO have launched a media ownership monitor, with information on Moldovan media outlets, as well as on beneficial owners. ⏳ A timely initiative! It is in line with Art. 6(2) EMFA requiring regulatory authorities to develop national media ownership databases. 💡 Disclosure of ownership & financial information of MSP allows citizens to know who owns a media outlet, enabling them to identify potential conflicts of interest; the availability of information on media ownership, structures & financial aspects also contributes to a fair & healthy media market environment 🏆 Congrats to the colleagues of the Audiovisual Council!
the Audiovisual Council of the Republic of Moldova (Consiliul Audioviziualului) together with the Global Media Registry and the Media Guard NGO have launched a media ownership monitor, with information on Moldovan media outlets, including biographies of owners and contributors. Moldova's media market has undergone considerable changes in recent years, and although there has been considerable progress in media ownership transparency, there are still multiple problems and institutions that only mimic transparency. Findings from Media Ownership Monitor Moldova include: ◼️ Moldova's media market ◼️ Media in Transnistria and Gagauzia ◼️ Russian Influence in Moldovan Media ◼️ The Role of Influencers in Public Information in Moldova The database currently includes 45 media outlets (13 TV stations, 9 radio stations, 6 newspapers and 17 news portals) and, for the first time, 12 social media influencers. to learn more about Media Ownership Monitor Moldova 👉 https://lnkd.in/e8cYvguM

Understanding the people who own or control media outlets is crucial in democratic societies to ensure pluralism and to fight media ownership concentration. That’s why Olaf Steenfadt and his team at the Global Media Registry have drafted a new ISO standard for unique media identifiers. The ultimate beneficial owners of media outlets will become more visible and transparent as part of the UMId registration process. Read the public consultation docs and submit your thoughts before the end of November at https://lnkd.in/eyVzm-XP
What would a unique identifier for media outlets (UMId) look like? How can it be implemented and what are potential use cases? Are there any unintended consequences to consider and mitigate? Over the past eight months we’ve been discussing these questions within the format of an official ISO workshop and the result is now available online for public consultation. So, please have a look, tell us what you think and what needs to be added or amended in your view! The UMId has been designed as a neutral key to signal the identity of sources along the whole distribution and supply chain of content online. Thus, it can help to reduce ambiguities in the information space that confuse both humans and algorithms. Even worse, we’ve seen increasing numbers of imposters and copycats recently that capitalize on lacking protection of legitimate media outlet’s digital identity – the so-called #Doppelganger phenomenon. Last not least, the documentation and authentication of sources will become increasingly important, possibly even a legal requirement, in the context of training AI-driven large language models. The UMId caters to the demand in all those fields and we keep discovering additional use cases in moving forward. It is interoperable with existing identifiers for legal entities (LEI) or for digital objects (C2PA, DOI). More than 80 individuals and institutions, among them WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers, Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), EPRA, Ofcom, CSA - Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel, Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), IPTC, Check My Ads Institute, Internews, Media Viability Accelerator, ISNI International Agency, GS1, Media Diversity Institute, The Blue Owl Group and many others, have contributed amazing amounts of time, energy and effort over the past months to build this draft IWA. We couldn’t be more grateful. Now is the time for you to weigh in. With all comments received by end of November, then compiled and considered, the publication of this International Workshop Agreement (IWA 44) by ISO - International Organization for Standardization is expected to happen in the first quarter of next year.

Moldova is now part of the Media Ownership Monitor! Olaf Steenfadt with the Global Media Registry, Alina Radu and her investigative journalism team from Ziarul de Garda launched MOM-Moldova in Chisinau that includes 45 🇲🇩 media outlets. In a premiere for MOM, social media influencers were added as a new category. The audience of the event was addressed by Janis Mazeiks, EU Delegation Ambassador and Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei, chair of the parliamentary committee responsible for media. Besides MOM-Moldova launch, a study on #Media #Pluralism in Moldova conducted for Consiliul Audioviziualului by the media expert Pierre François Docquir and professor Andrei Richter was presented. This an example of how a small talk over a conference coffee break can turn into something tangible both for media industry and the public. 📷 Ziarul de Garda

🔰 Monitorul Proprietății Media pentru Republica Moldova a fost lansat ieri, la Chișinău. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 🔰 Yesterday, in Chișinău, was launched the Media Ownership Monitor - #MOM - for Moldova. It represents a free database of the most important media institutions beneficiaries from Moldova, comprising information on their past, political affiliations as well as sources of finance. MOM is realized by the German company Global Media Registry, in cooperation with local journalists. 📍 For the Moldovan edition, it had been monitored 45 media institutions, namely owners of 13 TV channels, 9 Radio stations, 6 newspapers, 17 online news websites, and, for the first time, 12 local influencers' profiles. 📍During the same event was also presented a study concerning the level of conformity of the domestic audiovisual framework with the European Media Freedom Act. 🤝 The Moldova's 2024 edition of MOM was financed by the EU Delegation in Chișinău and the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. https://lnkd.in/dwe5GnZm 📸 Ziarul de Gardă

A new standard for creating unique media identifiers (UMId) for media outlets has been proposed via the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) process. The public consultation is open until the end of November. Open Ownership's Stephen Abbott Pugh has been involved with this process to learn more about emerging standards, the process of drafting/approving new ones and how #BeneficialOwnership information is collected by this standard. Thanks for the collaboration and we look forward to more, Olaf Steenfadt and Global Media Registry.
