🚨PPWR News: The European Parliament Takes a Big Step Toward Sustainability! ♻️ On 27th November 2024, the European Parliament approved the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), a groundbreaking step towards reducing packaging waste and fostering a circular economy across Europe. While this is a major milestone, the process isn’t complete yet – the Council of the European Union still needs to give its approval. Once finalized, the PPWR will pave the way for innovative and sustainable packaging solutions. Laurent Auguste, CEO of GreenDotGroup, commented: “Plastics recycling is one of the key technologies for recovering valuable raw materials from waste and enabling local utilisation while reducing critical environmental impacts, including CO2 emissions.” At IIC Packaging, we are proud to not only report on these developments but also to actively contribute to the shift towards sustainability. Through our innovative reusable packaging solutions, we are playing our part in reducing waste and helping businesses meet the challenges of the future. 💬 What’s your take on the PPWR? Let’s exchange ideas on how we can all innovate and adapt to these changes. Share your thoughts in the comments! GreenDot welcomes the official confirmation of the new EU Commission and sees it as a crucial opportunity to advance the circular economy in Europe. The new EU Commission has clearly committed itself to the goals of the European Green Deal initiative, which aims to make Europe climate-neutral by 2050. In this context, promoting the circular economy is essential to using resources efficiently, minimizing waste and reducing EU dependency on imports of raw materials. It is a positive signal that the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) was finally adopted by the European Parliament almost simultaneously. The new regulation stipulates quotas for the use of recycled materials in plastic packaging for the first time. “This is an indispensable measure to finally give the market for plastic recyclates the necessary support and to investors the signal that will lead to the needed investments to increase significantly recycling capacities,” said Laurent Auguste, CEO of GreenDot.

By 2050, annual demand for plastic in Europe will rise to around 75 million tons. If we succeed in avoiding plastic products on a large scale and switching to reusable packaging, the increase can be curbed – annual consumption would still be 62 million tons. To date, it is only possible to speak in rudimentary terms of a circular economy for plastic, but this will and must change. Laurent Auguste, CEO of the GreenDot Group, describes in an opinion piece for the “Lebensmittel Zeitung” what such a circular economy looks like and what the various recycling processes can contribute to it.
