Achieving safe and efficient sterilization & depyrogenation of vials Sterilization and depyrogenation are critical steps in pharmaceutical manufacturing, requiring a balance of precision, efficiency, and careful handling of delicate glass vials. A well-designed sterilization process is key to ensuring both safety and optimal results, reducing risks such as glass breakage and contamination. 🌡️ Gentle Heating: Minimizing the temperature gradient within the vial through pre-heating the bottom of the vial reduces stress on the glass which helps prevent breakage and ensures careful handling of each vial. 🛠️ Optimal Airflow Control: The sterilization tunnel features two sets of fans: one to regulate airflow and one to maintain the appropriate pressure cascade. HEPA 14 filters are used to achieve ISO 5 standards in the heating and cooling zones. 🌬️ Efficient Process: The hot air module uses a recirculation process for maximum purity, while the precise cooling module ensures quick and accurate temperature reduction, preparing vials for seamless transfer to the filling area. 🔒 No “Ring of Concern”: The sterilization tunnel outfeed includes a unique double door system equipped with “static sealing” which ensures that no contamination occurs during the decontamination process. No manual cleaning of the “Ring of Concern” necessary. ❎ No human intervention: The startup and run-empty process of the sterilization tunnel is fully automated by default, eliminating the need for any operator intervention. This optimized sterilization process ensures safe and efficient vial handling through gentle heating, minimal pressure, and strict environmental controls. Yesterday I had the chance to present at the ISPE Facility of the Future Conference in San Francisco about the usage of robotics in Grade A environments and how automation can facilitate compliance. The track I presented it was full of great case studies giving a glimpse the future of pharmaceutical manufacturing. Bill Rusitzky and Jean-Maxime Guay presented on telemanipulation in pharmaceutical environments and especially in grade A including a very cool live demo of the application. Michael Lawlor and Gregory Albertson presented on the implementation of a digital twin of a midscale aseptic filling machine and what benefits they achieved with it.
