🏰👣🎄 Yesterday was the last HRA City Walk of the year. Together with 20 participants we explored the fascinating Hamburg City Hall. While learning more about the city’s history, we discovered various rooms within the building, including the parliamentary meeting room, the mayor's office, and the impressive grand ballroom, complete with stunning chandeliers and elegant leather wallpaper. We also enjoyed a fantastic view of the Christmas market in front of the City Hall, where we continued our networking over a glass of mulled wine. Many thanks to all doctoral, postdoctoral and guest researchers who participated and to our fabulous tour guide! 📅 𝗨𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: https://lnkd.in/eZyichw2

🌟 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 🌟 Last night, the Hamburg Research Academy hosted the "International Researcher Night 2024: Paving Your Postdoc Career", an event dedicated to exploring career paths in academia and fostering connections among peers. The evening began with an inspiring talk by Anne Schreiter, Ph.D. from the German Scholars Organization e.V. (GSO) on how to set yourself up for "lucky coincidences" in your career. She emphasized taking charge of one's future, leveraging opportunities, and building visibility for success. This was followed by two parallel fireside chats: Prof. Dr. Eleanor Frajka-Williams from the Institute of Oceanography discussed paths to professorship and challenges for international researchers in a new country. Meanwhile, Dr. Hope E. Morgan from the Institute of Sign Language and Communication of the Deaf guided participants through the intricacies of grant writing. Many thanks to Anne Schreiter, Eleanor Frajka-Williams and Hope E. Morgan for your time and expertise!

When have you witnessed academic kindness? Interacting with kindness is a central element of good professional conduct and of fair, healthy working environments. As a researcher, you might have experienced academic kindness when: 💠 a more experienced scholar mentored you 💠 peers took time to edit your work, gift their phrases and provide their subject matter expertise 💠 information was shared freely, so all have the same access to opportunities 💠 coworkers contributed to a greater cause that didn't serve an immediate purpose for them personally 💠 colleagues encouraged you 💠 peers highlighted your strengths to others In academia, we're sometimes witnessing game of thrones-like wars between research approaches, inappropriately harsh public criticism ("feedback"), carelessness in the duty towards early-career colleagues, glorification of over-work, and other things that can put one off the field entirely. But there's also so many scholars who reflect what they have learned about #researchculture, who counteract unhealthy working styles on an individual level, and who collaborate towards systemic change. Academic kindness is a term to describe these efforts. You'll be hearing more on that next April, when we have a keynote on the concept by science and technology researcher Anita Thaler at our Annual Event: https://lnkd.in/ddvM36Kr What are your examples of academic kindness? #community #academia #researchculture #workplaceviolence #safety #postdocs

🤔 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮 Do you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed by the multitude of choices we face in academia — and in life, for that matter? The academic journey is full with decisions, and each one often feels crucial. With seemingly endless possibilities and a hyper-competitive environment, it’s easy to feel paralyzed by the weight of our options. That’s why yesterday, we hosted two insightful workshops led by Vicent Botella-Soler from Dickerson et al., focusing on decision-making in the academic sphere: one for coordinators of our member institutions who are actively involved in advising early career researchers, and the other for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. Here are some key takeaways from his inspiring session: 🡨🡪 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗲𝘀: Avoid framing decisions as “either/or” situations that limit your perspective and exclude all other possible options. 🎯 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺: Remember, there is no single perfect decision! Holding out for the “perfect” choice can lead to missed opportunities that would have been “good enough”. 🤷♂️ 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆: As Vicent put it, "...random things are going to happen to you!" Recognizing that you will never have all the information can make it easier to make decisions and accept that we can never know in advance how things will turn out, helping you move forward.

With reforms underway, understanding the process is essential. Here’s where things stand and what’s ahead: 📌 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀: • Draft Presentation: In March 2024, the Ministry of Education (BMBF) presented and revised a draft after feedback from stakeholders. • Stakeholder Feedback: In May and June, several postdoc networks shared critical statements on the draft. • First Reading: On October 16, the draft had its first reading in the Bundestag and was referred to the Committee on Education, Research, and Technology Assessment. ➡️ 𝗨𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀: • Committee Stage: Amendments can be proposed here, with review taking several weeks to a few months, depending on the committee’s workload. • Second and Third Readings: The bill will return to the Bundestag for final debate and voting. Amendments are still possible. • Bundesrat Consideration: This bill does not require Bundesrat approval, though the Bundesrat has generally supported its objectives. • Publication and Enactment: After passing, the bill will be signed by the Federal President and published. Changes will likely take effect six months later, with current contract regulations staying in effect until contracts expire. For further details, check out statements from the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (Federal Ministry of Education and Research), the German Scholars Organization e.V. (GSO), and the Leibniz PostDoc Network. The final outcome remains uncertain during the committee phase, where key amendments can still be made. We’ll keep you updated on the progress of the WissZeitVG reform and the ongoing debate. ----------------------------- For more information: 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭 https://lnkd.in/esbratDC https://lnkd.in/e_3VUJgh 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐙𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐕𝐆 Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung https://lnkd.in/dFKNi8En German Scholars Organization e.V.
