📑 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀: 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻 🌍 In an era where information is readily shared across global networks, the integrity of research practices has never been more critical. Thanks to the EUGLOH network, Jawed Qaderi, PhD candidate in Chemistry at the Universität Hamburg, recently had the opportunity to participate in the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) “Research Ethics and Integrity” at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. This initiative brought together researchers from across Europe to discuss ethical considerations in advancing global health. Here, Jawed shares some insights from the event. (𝗪𝗵𝘆) 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰? The program deepened my understanding of Good Scientific Practice, particularly in areas such as ethical research conduct, responsible data management, and the importance of transparency in publishing. The interdisciplinary and international exchange was extremely beneficial, as it provided diverse perspectives on ethical challenges in different fields and highlighted the importance of maintaining integrity in collaborative research. 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? My supervisor was very supportive of my participation, recognizing the importance of ethical considerations in scientific research and the value of engaging in international discussions on research integrity. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲? I strongly believe that international mobility is crucial during a PhD. It provides opportunities to collaborate with researchers from different backgrounds, experience new research environments, and develop a global perspective on scientific challenges. Exposure to diverse academic cultures enhances both personal and professional growth and fosters innovation in research. 🔗 More information on Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes: https://lnkd.in/eF3b3CR9

How often do you receive affirmative feedback? Do you regularly express your high esteem of others? Here is a suggestion to try from our "academic kindness" repository! 🌈 Thanking authors of publications you use in research or teaching; letting them know how their work has made a positive impact. 🌿 Giving and receiving feedback is a practice academics are very used to. Through peer reviews, after conference presentations, or in funding or hiring decisions, assessments are made. Often, there is "constructive criticsm" meant to inspire improvements. Sometimes, feedback is less constructive and more hostile; an act of gate-keeping, targetting women and other underrepresented groups much more frequently. Philipp Schultz writes: "… we too seldom just articulate positive, affirmative, encouraging and generous feedback about something we truly enjoyed reading, and from which we benefited intellectually, politically or even personally." To counteract this on an individual level, we can be generous with our praise, if we find a work of research useful or inspiring. It can make someone's day or even week to learn that their work gets noticed! Schulz shares from his teaching practice, that he and his students: "… let the authors know how we engaged with their work, to recognize and thank them for their work, and to share with them how this has been beneficial for us." Why not try this out - yourself, with your students, or encourage it among your team, and see what you get back! 🔖 Read on: Philipp Schulz (2020): Practicing Academic Kindness in the Classroom: Toolbox Blog: Gender- und Diversitykompetenz für die Lehre. https://lnkd.in/eSAb4Uki 🔖 Find our full list of suggestions from late 2023: https://lnkd.in/eBjE-Auh 🔖 Come to our Annual Event on April 16 to explore more: https://lnkd.in/ddvM36Kr
