Marfan syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the FBN1 gene that results in systemic connective tissue abnormalities affecting multiple body systems, including the cardiovascular, ocular and musculoskeletal systems. As highlighted by Krishnaveni Govender in the latest issue of ReCent Medical News, complications such as aortic aneurysm or dissection often led to reduced life expectancy, but advances in medical and surgical care have dramatically improved outcomes and brought life expectancy closer to normal. Diagnosis is based on a combination of clinical assessment and imaging, with the 2010 revised Ghent Criteria emphasising early detection and intervention. The assessment of Marfan syndrome requires a thorough evaluation of systemic involvement and treatment adherence, reflecting both the potential risks and advances in management. This balanced approach is essential as evolving care continues to change the outlook for people living with genetic conditions such as Marfan syndrome.
