2007. A new career door opened for me. And with it came the question that newcomers and seasoned executives inevitably ask themselves at those points: What do I want to achieve in my professional life? Do the company values correspond to my own? At the beginning of my time at Heidelberg Materials, I was sometimes asked why I chose to work in an industry that wasn’t perceived as being very progressive. My answer was – and still is – simple: Big challenges hold the potential for big impact and solutions. Yes, the building materials industry has a reputation for being resource-intensive and environmentally taxing. But it’s also so fundamental to our daily lives – it enables the infrastructure that supports our communities, economies, daily lives – and progress. Precisely because of its scale and impact to all of us, our industry has the power to lead transformational change. And that’s been our focus for years: innovating to set new – sustainability – standards for our industry. Here are only a few examples of how we make things really happen: 🟢 evoZero: Our Brevik CCS lighthouse project is poised to become the first industrial-scale carbon capture facility in the cement industry. Once operational in 2025, our customers will be able to leverage our carbon captured net-zero evoZero cement and concrete for their benefits. This innovation embodies our commitment to creating sustainable solutions that are both scalable and impactful. 🟢 ReConcrete: As part of our patented ReConcrete process, demolition concrete is broken down into its original constituents through a newly designed, proprietary crushing mechanism. To enable this on a large scale, a few months ago we inaugurated our first-of-its-kind recycling plant for selective separation of demolition concrete in Poland. Innovations like these highlight our ambition to closing the loop, offering circular alternatives for 50% of our concrete products by 2030. 🟢 3D concrete printing: Allowing for the reduction of material usage and waste, while increasing process efficiency and safety. This innovative approach ensures enhanced design freedom and supports our sustainability strategy by creating products that are fully recyclable. The progress we’ve made at Heidelberg Materials contributes to meaningful change in an industry ripe for transformation. Our efforts in sustainability and innovation reflect the values and the impact I strive to achieve. And it´s so much fun – together with our 51.000 entrepreneurs around the world.
