How do deformation, erosion, and precipitation interact during orogenic growth? Find out in this new study led by Xiaoping Yuan where we used a 3-code coupling between #ASPECT, #FASTSCAPE, and #LFPM. Article here: https://lnkd.in/enRTh5-U We show that, for intermediate erodibility models, rock uplift rates and precipitation rates correlate well with erosion rates during the formation of orogenic plateaus. We demonstrate a cyclicity of correlation evolution among uplift, precipitation, and erosion rates through the development of new faults propagating outward. 🌟 GFZ Research Highlights 🌟 Coniferous forests: Climate effects of forest fires last for decades Coniferous forests make up around half of all forest areas worldwide. North America alone is home to a third of these boreal forests. Fires have been much more frequent there in recent decades. In 2023, all records were broken: 140,000 km2 of Canadian forest were on fire, which corresponds to 1.4 percent of Canada's area or around 40 percent of the area of Germany. The fires not only release immense amounts of CO2 that was previously trapped in the wood. The impact on plant physiology can still be detected long afterwards. In many regions, the otherwise permanently frozen ground (permafrost) thaws after a forest fire. Depending on the topography, this can lead to waterlogging of the soil and increased emissions of methane, a gas that has a particularly strong impact on the climate, into the atmosphere. Fires change landscapes permanently and the vast barren areas may have an impact on the climate for decades. Studies that examine the possible long-term effects in more detail are therefore extremely important. A team led by Dr. Manuel Helbig from the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, has analyzed the climatic effects of fires in North American coniferous forests dating back to 1928. Based on data from satellite and ground-based measurements, it examined surface temperatures and the leaf area index as well as the heat exchange between the forest floor and the atmosphere. Among other things, the researchers were able to show that burnt coniferous forest areas result in higher surface temperatures during the day for up to five decades in the cool summers of northern latitudes. As of 1 January 2025, the former Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is known as: GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences or in German: GFZ Helmholtz-Zentrum für Geoforschung Susanne Buiter, Scientific Director of the GFZ, says: “The GFZ is the National Centre for Solid Earth Research in Germany. The new name and the new logo give us additional momentum for the new year, which is of particular strategic importance for us. In June, the GFZ – like the other centres of the Helmholtz Association – will be evaluated by an independent international jury. At the same time, the development of the next research programme ‘PoF V’ is in full swing. It will guide our science in cooperation with the six other centres in the Helmholtz Research Field Earth and Environment for seven years from 2028. In addition to our strategic and scientific work, we look forward to many opportunities in the new year to remain in lively dialogue with all parts of society”. New vision and mission of the GFZ The GFZ has also given itself a fresh vision and mission statement that summarises the long-term goals of our research in a few words. Round Table “Natural Hazards and Climate Change” at Falling Walls Science Summit 24 Large populations live in areas prone to natural hazards like volcanism, earthquakes, floods, and landslides. Climate change leading to rising sea levels, shifting rainfall, and melting ice elevates the risks for these hazardous events, even the frequency of earthquakes. At the same time, population centres in vulnerable regions continue to grow, putting more and more people at risk. The round table explored research on monitoring, early warning, modeling, and public engagement to help society better prepare for natural hazards but also to curb the progression of climate change.
