Defensible space. Defensible space is a buffer zone around a structure that slows or stops the spread of wildfire. But did you know the dimensions of these zones vary widely between countries? Exploring the Heart of Europe's #Space Training and #Research 🌍🚀 Last Friday, we had the incredible opportunity to visit the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V.) in #Cologne, right in the heart of #Europe. As part of the ESA BIC #NRW program with our Defensible Space Viewer, we were warmly hosted by European Space Agency - ESA and EurA AG for an unique experience. Our visit included a tour of the #Envihab, featuring its state-of-the-art personnel centrifuge, as well as the original training facilities for the #ISS and the #Columbus laboratory. The highlight? A guided tour of the new #Luna laboratory, led by none other than #astronaut Matthias Maurer himself. His insights and expertise brought the experience to life—thank you, Matthias, for your time and inspiration! This visit not only gave us a deeper appreciation of ESA's cutting-edge projects, which support our own endeavors, but also provided a fantastic #opportunity to connect with fellow startups in the #ESA/#DLR #Cosmos. 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟭.𝟱𝗠 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, according to a new study. Researchers warn of increasingly higher deaths as climate change exacerbates wildfires, urging “urgent action” to address this mortality. Global Wildfire Prevention: Key Approaches in the U.S., Canada, France, and Greece 🌍🔥 As wildfires become more frequent and intense across the globe, different countries have implemented various strategies to reduce risks and protect communities. From legal obligations to community-based programs, here's a comparison of wildfire prevention measures in the U.S., Canada, France, and Greece: Key Similarities: Defensible Space: All four countries emphasize clearing vegetation and creating defensible space around properties to slow or stop the spread of wildfires. Vegetation Management: Whether voluntary or mandatory, clearing dry grass, shrubs, and trees is a common strategy for reducing fire risks. Community and Individual Responsibility: While the U.S. and Canada focus on community engagement, France and Greece enforce individual responsibility for land clearance. Key Differences: U.S. (Firewise USA®) and Canada (FireSmart): These are voluntary programs, encouraging homeowners and communities to actively engage in wildfire risk reduction and community-driven efforts with education on fire-resistant landscaping and home hardening. France (Obligation légale de débroussaillement) and Greece (Καθαρισμός Οικοπέδων): These are mandatory laws requiring property owners in fire-prone zones to clear vegetation around their homes (typically within 20-50 meters). Legal enforcement, with fines for non-compliance. What We Can Learn: Whether voluntary or mandatory, effective wildfire prevention requires active participation from both individuals and communities. Education and planning (as seen in the U.S. and Canada) help empower communities, while clear legal mandates (as in France and Greece) enforce vital fire safety measures. A global approach to reducing wildfire risk is essential for protecting our families, ecosystems, and assets. Flying embers travelled across Okanagan Lake this past August during the McDougall Creek wildfire, according to the final report commissioned by Fire Smart BC and produced by experts in the field. The embers ignited receptive combustible vegetation and stuff next to homes and then ignited homes that became the fuel to ignite more homes. According to the study, the embers from the McDougall Creek wildfire were the primary mechanism that ignited fine materials on roofing, siding, decks, fences and things like patio furniture. These were the first things to ignite in many instances. Homes that had taken FireSmart measures, like removing flammable items from around homes, had better survival rates that those that hadn't. Like Deja Vu, all over again reading it. We see the same pathways of home ignition in the reports written by Jack Cohen for Panorama Fire in Bel Air 1980, the Tunnell Fire in Oakland in 1991, Cerro Grande and Los Alamos in 2000, Camp Fire in Paradise on 2018, Lytton in 2022 and many more. Long overdue for us to adopt a home and community vulnerability definition of the problem. We need to change our mental model to focus on the vulnerabilities of the built environment - instead of thinking we can stop the inevitable wildfire.

Wildfire preparedeness series (4/5) - this time in Greece ☀️ : Wildfire Prevention in Greece: The Importance of "Kαθαρισμός Οικοπέδων" (Clearing of Land) for Safety 🌲🔥 In Greece, the risk of wildfires is a serious concern, especially during the hot summer months. To reduce the threat of wildfires and protect both properties and lives, the government enforces the "Καθαρισμός Οικοπέδων" (clearing of land) requirement, which mandates property owners in high-risk areas to clear vegetation around their homes and land. What is the "Καθαρισμός Οικοπέδων"? The "Καθαρισμός Οικοπέδων" law requires that property owners in wildfire-prone regions clear any dry vegetation, trees, and flammable materials from the areas around their properties. This measure is aimed at creating defensible space to help prevent the spread of wildfires and protect homes, especially in vulnerable areas close to forests or bushland. Key Points of the Law: Mandatory clearance zone: Property owners must clear land up to a certain distance from their homes (typically at least 20 meters, though local regulations may vary). Types of vegetation to remove: The law applies to dry grass, bushes, shrubs, trees, and other vegetation that could easily catch fire. Legal responsibility: It is the responsibility of every property owner in at-risk zones to comply with this law. Failure to comply can lead to fines and other legal consequences. Why It’s Crucial Wildfires in Greece have devastating impacts, threatening both lives and property. By ensuring that homes and buildings are surrounded by defensible spaces, the risk of fire spreading is significantly reduced, giving both residents and firefighters a better chance to protect homes. Some houses, seemingly scattered at random, were reduced to rubble. Others, sometimes next door, were almost entirely unaffected — some still with lush green lawns. Experts still disagree over whether homes can be completely fireproofed in a wind-driven ember fire. I suspect (but don't know) that none of the homes that burned fully met the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety - IBHS "Wildfire Prepared Home specifications," few if any fully met the CDI "Safer From Wildfire" requirements. Curious to learn how many may have been part of a Firewise community. I know California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) has already inspected all lost structures, so that info will be forthcoming.
