🌲🔥 Witness Innovation in Action: Wildfire Defense at Work 🔥🌲 Check out this video showcasing the FireFence system in action, containing a wind-driven fire front running up a hill. This could be an additional toolbox in your community-driven wildfire defense, transforming paths and roads into effective fuel breaks! The drift-prone emission of water droplets means the system treats vegetation over large corridors ahead of the fire before the fire sucks up moist and cool air as the front approaches. The system can be scaled over long distances (kilometers / miles) and is shipped in modules with varying sizes from trailers to containers. This means a single fire crew can now treat more distance all whilst staying out of the danger zone. Wildfires are unpredictable, but preparedness makes all the difference. Take a moment to assess your community's readiness with this simple checklist: ✅ Strategic Roads Identified: Are there accessible roads surrounding your community for evacuation and emergency response? ✅ Fuel Breaks Built: Have you created and maintained fuel breaks to slow fire spread and protect critical areas? ✅ Strategic Water Reserves: Is your community equipped with water reserves (e.g., tanks, ponds, or reservoirs) in key locations for firefighting efforts? Your community's resilience starts with preparation. What steps has your community taken to prepare for wildfires? Share your insights and let’s keep the conversation going! IN THE NEWS: Los Angeles Times Sometimes there seems to be no rhyme or reason why a home survives a wildfire when all the others around it burned. Sometimes though, we know why a home survived - home hardening. Malibu residents Jim and Nancy Evans are living proof that modern approaches to architecture and landscaping can make all the difference when facing wildfire threats. Their home survived against the odds, thanks to fire-resilient design choices like steel-reinforced walls and a durable metal roof. "Clearing vegetation and debris from around a home is also key", Berlant said. "These efforts don't have to be expensive", he said, pointing to a list of low-cost retrofits from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. https://lnkd.in/gbWjacE4 To learn what you can do, go to visit: https://lnkd.in/gPB8Zn3Q Read the story to learn what made the difference for their home. https://lnkd.in/giFjqqfy #CAWildfires #LAwildfires #PalisadesFire #EatonFire Joe Tyler Anale Burlew Nick Schuler, CFO, PIO Lisa Lien-Mager Wade Crowfoot Tony Andersen

Last week I shared a very raw and grief written post showing a video of our home burned down by the #PalisadesFire. After taking a few days and processing a bit more, I have made an attempt to more clearly articulate a plea to folks working in the geospatial and tech industries to wake up and realize we are failing the people and causes that need us the most. The gist: "In these most recent Los Angeles fires, winds were so strong there could be no air support for fighting or mapping the Palisades Fire. So for 12+ hours we were left without any realtime fire mapping information. Where was the satellite information then? I have a PhD in Remote Sensing, I have built satellite data processing pipelines, I help manage one of the NASA satellite data centers, I teach courses on climate resilience, adaptation and geoinformatics. I have had the privilege of attending conferences around the world seeing first-hand demos of incredible science - pitched Star Wars-esque technologies, self-tasking satellites and yet the irony is that with all my experience I could not access the information I knew existed to help our community."
When our community burned where was the satellite information?

Appreciate this. To protect communities - We need to deal with the structures, and the moat and pond of vegetation around them - not the vast lake or ocean of vegetation across the West. In other words, it’s not the fire prone and fire adapted landscape that is the issue in loss of communities. Fire is inevitable. The landscape might benefit from some work for the landscape’s sake, but it is not related to whether homes burn.
There has been a ton of talk this week about the next big disruptor in technology to end catastrophic wildfire. If you can't look at this picture and see the problem then I am advising you to take an S-190 introduction to wildfire behavior course online and immerse yourself in the problem at hand. We have a community wildfire problem that involves the private property owners. We can't suppress our way out of this. The solutions to help mitigate this problem are well known but they aren't flashy. They involve you "DIY" or hiring landscapers and contractors to help make your home fire resilient. Watching with concern as devastating wildfires sweep through communities in southern California, destroying homes and forcing communities to flee. Our hearts go out to those who endure loss and to the firefighters who risk everything to contain the inferno despite strained resources. This tragedy underscores a growing reality: wildfire are intensifying and can cause damage all year round. The good news of our forecasts accurately recognizing the dangerous ingredients that lead to such firestorms — dry, strong winds and parched landscapes - and mindsets shifting to more proactive landscape and vegetation management are contrasted by the slow pace with which we take up best practices. There is no single solution to this challenge. It requires collective action from public and private sectors, innovative technology to bolster preparedness, improved forest management, and robust policies to mitigate risk. This fire reminds us strongly of the Athens wildfire last summer entering northern suburbs of the city. Areas deemed safe and left untreated woke up to a dire new reality. The perfect firestorms are becoming a new norm. The stakes are too high for delay. It's time to adapt and act to protect our communities and the future of our landscapes. https://lnkd.in/eUtHAuN4

It’s especially challenging for aerial firefighting aircraft to maintain safety margins and be effective when the wind is so strong it blows the retardant/water out into the Pacific before it can touch the ground. Despite these conditions, this was excellent wind and terrain reading, along with a nice rollback delivery, by this Los Angeles County Fire Department/Quebec Canadair CL-415 Super Scooper pilot during the #PalisadesFire in #LosAngeles. Nice ocean scooping as well. Their efforts, alongside those of other fire aircraft, continue to support the fearless ground crews and citizens risking their lives to protect our communities. 🌍 Global Wildfires: Defensible Space in Greece vs. the US 🔥 Wildfire preparedness means adapting strategies to fit local landscapes and policies. Following our comparison of defensible space practices in France and the US, let’s explore how Greece approaches wildfire resilience. 🇺🇸 US Approach: Defensible space guidelines in the US often prescribe three zones: Zone 1 (0-30 feet): Clear flammable vegetation and create a safety buffer. Zone 2 (30-100 feet): Reduce fuel through tree spacing and trimming. Zone 3 (beyond 100 feet, where applicable): Manage vegetation for further fire resistance. 🇬🇷 Greece's Approach: Wildfire regulations in Greece often focus on mandatory vegetation clearance around properties. For example: Property owners must clear vegetation within 10 meters (~33 feet) of their buildings. Broader buffer zones can be enforced near forests or in high-risk areas, depending on local conditions. 🔍 Key Insight: While the US emphasizes detailed, multi-zone guidelines, Greece takes a more localized approach driven by terrain and community needs. Both strategies share a common goal: reducing fire intensity and giving firefighters critical time to respond. 🌟 Why It Matters: As climate change fuels more intense wildfire seasons, learning from different defensible space policies can inspire better global practices. 💬 Quiz Time: Can you guess which ancient temple is featured in the image accompanying this post? 🌍 Global Wildfires: Defensible Space in France vs. the US 🔥 Wildfires are a growing global challenge, and the key to protecting lives, homes, and ecosystems lies in preparedness. One crucial tool? Defensible space. Defensible space is a buffer zone around a structure that slows or stops the spread of wildfire. But did you know the dimensions of these zones vary widely between countries? For example: 🇺🇸 In the US, defensible space is often divided into two or three zones: Zone 1 (0-30 feet): Immediate clearance, focusing on removing all flammable vegetation. Zone 2 (30-100 feet): Reduced fuel, with tree spacing and trimming to reduce fire intensity. Zone 3 (optional, beyond 100 feet): Managing vegetation to slow the fire. 🇫🇷 In France, the law requires homeowners in wildfire-prone areas to clear vegetation within 50 meters (about 164 feet) of their property. While the approach may differ, the principle is the same: minimize risk by removing fuel near structures. Both approaches highlight proactive measures to adapt to unique landscapes and wildfire risks. You can visualise the defensible space surrounding your asset in 3D here: https://lnkd.in/efRUXKYF 🌟 Why It Matters: As wildfires become more frequent and severe, the need to tailor defensible space practices to local conditions is critical. This is not just a matter of policy but of saving lives and communities. 💬 Join the Conversation: How does your community define and implement defensible space?
