📢 Significant Advancements on Our Iodine Electric Propulsion System! Our team is making progress in the management of the integrated system that combines thruster, iodine, and rare gas regulation and heating. We are working on a flexible strategy by creating a PPU (Power Propulsion Unit) breadboard, utilizing power supplies designed for a range of 3–5 kW (up to 800V). This initiative is supported by the expertise of Airbus Elancourt in high-power DC supplies and the assistance of Airbus Toulouse in system management. Key Accomplishments: ✅ The Breadboard specification has been thoroughly reviewed, and the overall Architecture has been established. ✅Hardware Developments: All Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components have been ordered, and the design for specific electronics racks and harnesses for powering and self-testing the breadboard is currently in the manufacturing phase. ✅Software Progress: A user-friendly Human Machine Interface has been created in collaboration with Airbus Toulouse and Friedrichshafen, and COTS drivers have been developed and successfully tested. A detailed test plan has been issued, encompassing everything from component validation to the complete functionality of the breadboard. Next Steps: ▶️ Complete the functional design report. ▶️Assemble the PPU Breadboard, create and evaluate software utilizing the self-test rack and simulators from March to May. ▶️Perform the Breadboard acceptance test in June. ▶️ From July, the Airbus Elancourt team will assist with coupling tests for setup, parameter adjustment, and soft functional tests involving the iFACT thruster and fluidic regulators. This work package is essential to the overall iFACT-MP project, allowing us to oversee the entire electric propulsion system and accurately replicate thrust sequences. We are refining all aspects, from analog functions to digital control systems, as we advance the frontiers of aerospace innovation. Stay tuned for more updates! 📢 Milestone achievement: Advancing Iodine Electric Propulsion 🎯 A significant milestone has been achieved in the iFACT-MP project with the successful completion of the thruster unit design phase. ⚙️ The unit is comprised of an iodine thruster, a noble gas cathode and a structural bracket, all designed to enhance thermal efficiency and ensure compatibility with iodine 🔩 In collaboration with Fraunhofer IKTS, there is an ongoing parallel development for an iodine-fed cathode using C12A7 emitters. 🛠️ The next phases involve procurement, manufacturing, integration and testing, that will lead to the first coupling test of the subsystem in July. This work serves as a core technical building block for the 3-5kW iodine electric propulsion subsystem integrated within iFACT-MP. More insights coming soon! This approach safeguards the investment, budget, and commitment of the participants. 📡 Excellence: The project brings together leading European research institutions and experts to develop iodine thrusters, electride emitters, and space-grade components, along with advanced testing and diagnostics for this technology. 💶 Economic: The rapid increase and unpredictability of xenon prices have created a need for alternative propellants in space missions. While krypton has been a common alternative, using iodine as a propel, it offers significant cost and volume advantages, providing a competitive edge for European space industries. 📈 Performance: A unique iodine feeding system will be developed according to flight standards, focusing on design, verification, heat control and error handling.
