Patricia opened her neighborhood food stall – or gargote, as they are known in #Madagascar – in 2010 but lacked sufficient funds to sustain and grow the business. A microloan and financial training from PAMF Madagascar changed everything. With an initial loan of 1 million ariary (about $220), she and her husband have been able to expand their business and hire a new employee. They now own a home and can afford to send their two children to school. IFC works with microfinance institutions like PAMF Madagascar to serve small business owners like Patricia and support financial inclusion and resilience at the base of the pyramid. Climate change is driving temperatures to record highs across the globe, putting millions of lives and livelihoods at risk. Cooling demand is set to double by 2050 in developing economies who are on the frontlines of extreme heat. The new IFC and UNEP report highlights that sustainable cooling represents a $8 trillion opportunity in developing economies, with the potential to slash emissions, boost health and productivity. The cooling market in developing economies is expected to double to at least $600 billion by 2050; mobilizing private capital will be key to financing sustainable cooling solutions in developing economies.
