A very strong end to season 4 of the Inner Green Deal podcast with Daniel Christian Wahl, author of the seminal work "Designing Regenerative Cultures"! Daniel talks about the nature of regenerative cultures and what the world might look like if that were the dominant model for our societies.  Regenerative cultures recognise the individuality of a given place and the people in it. One of the problems that has come with the drive towards globalization is that we’ve lost our connection to place and relationship to the local ecosystem. And the only way to heal the planet is to do so place by place by place, you can’t start by healing the planet - says Daniel. Yet, despite the specific nature of the local ecosystem, there are common principles to follow: working with nature and being a beneficial species in the ecosystems we inhabit as homo-sapiens rather than being degenerative on both the local ecosystems and the planetary biosphere. A fascinating conversation with Daniel starting of with his personal experience about his time as a young boy at his grandmother's house on a Mediterranean hill. Go and have a listen :).    If you enjoyed this episode, please consider subscribing to our podcast or leaving a review. In doing so you make it easier for people to discover our podcast. The Inner Green Deal at COP29 Azerbaijan! Co-founder Jeroen Janss presented the Community Handprint: now a UN Climate Change Global Innovation Project to accelerate local climate action through community building and inner development. Building capacity (Inner Handprint) to accelerate local action (Outer Handprint)! Very grateful for the great partnership with the Inner Development Goals, together bringing the power of inner development to the heart of international climate politics. Big thank you to the entire UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub (UGIH) led by Massamba Thioye and to 🦜 Laila Martins for bringing us all together! #NeverGiveUp. #Community #ThereIsMoreInUS

Thrilled to share our Community Handprint project at COP29 Azerbaijan! As a UN Climate Change Global Innovation Project, we shared our approach for accelerating local climate action through community building and inner development. Very grateful for the partnership between the Inner Green Deal and the Inner Development Goals, together bringing the power of inner development to the heart of international climate politics. While a single presentation at a busy Climate Conference might not change everything, partnering with the UN—which earlier this year recognized our project as a UN Climate Change Global Innovation Project —inspires us to push further. A big thank you to Massamba Thioye, Nitin Arora, Sylvia Otieno, Karla Solis-Garcia, Nivya PC and many others from the UGIH Community for their support and strong belief in the values of Caring, Sharing, and Daring! Want to help integrate behavior change and inner development into the global UN agenda? Reach out to 🦜 Laila Martins to get involved.   Last month, 🦜 Laila Martins, Jamie Bristow, Klaus Mertens, Helena Harnik, MBA, Jeroen Janss and many others facilitated a full day of innovation workshops at the Inner Development Goals (#IDGs) Summit, producing 18 projects aimed at integrating inner development into climate mitigation and adaptation processes in cities worldwide. The most promising of these projects will be submitted to the UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub (UGIH) and might also become Global Innovation Projects.   Looking forward to further collaborations and impactful work together! #COP29 #Sustainability Liane Stephan, Jan Artem Henriksson, Åsa Jarskog, Katharina Moser, Daniel Hires 🌍, Tomas Björkman, Kathleen Melis, Valentine Goblet, Nina Bressler, Christoph Schönherr, Alex Alexandrou, Lieven Callewaert, Ivy de Bruijn ✯, Kees Froeling, Katharina Buchgeister, Lettemieke Mulder, Molly Stevenson, Acacia Smith, Marion Birnstill, Tamsin Walker.

Happy to play our role in bringing the Inner Development Goals to the key events this fall! For those who speak Dutch, check out the #SystemShakers conference in Gent on November 14 where our co-founder @Jeroen Janss will speak. Later this week, we will be speaking at #COP29 about the IDGs as well as our UN Climate Change Innovation Project the "Community Handprint". And last month we spoke at the IMPACT FESTIVAL in Frankfurt as well as the #IDGSummit in Stockholm. Great to see first hand the reactions from people in these different places. Today someone in our Conscious Food Systems Alliance Leadership program was saying, "thanks to the IDGs, I now have a sense of direction and know where to start. Previously I felt I could do more but was overwhelmed by the many possibilities for inner development". All this gives us hope that we are on the right track! Join us! #ActiveHope

🧠 Intelligence of #Emotions Our third module of the Mindfulness-Based Sustainable Transformation program took us deep into the emotional terrain of our current #environmental and #climate #crisis. It was an intense exploration of what it means to truly feel and face the state of our world. We reflected on the emotions that are triggered by the unfolding crisis—grief, #anxiety, fear, even anger—and how these feelings can shape our behaviors. We discussed eco-anxiety, recognizing it as a profoundly healthy human reaction that reflects just how much we care about our natural world and all living beings. 🌱Yet, how do we regulate these strong emotions without feeling overwhelmed? 🌱How do we address the inner critical voices that fuel our distress and lead us to states of hopelessness or despair? In our exploration, we learned the power of creating a compassionate relationship with our unpleasant emotions. Self-compassion isn’t about dismissing the pain but rather holding it kindly, acknowledging that our inner struggles are a mirror of our societal condition. Inner and outer truly echo each other. This brings us to a crucial insight: because #inner and #outer are #inseparable, the changes we cultivate within ourselves can ripple outward. When we practice self-compassion, courage, and mindfulness, we have the potential to echo those changes into the world around us, contributing to a more compassionate and resilient #society. 🌱Have you experienced eco-anxiety or other strong emotions related to the climate crisis? 🌱How have you managed to hold space for them in your life? 🌿 Mindfulness-Based Sustainable Transformation: Module 2 - Awake Mind After launching our Mindfulness-Based Sustainable Transformation programme last week, yesterday’s session went even deeper, leaving a meaningful impact on everyone involved. Participants explored the current state of our planet, connecting with it on a personal level that helped them sense and feeltheir relationship to this reality. It was a transformative experience in cultivating the inner strength to envision a future where compassion and ecosystems flourish together. This exploration highlighted how our inner states—mind, body, and emotions—interconnect and ultimately shape how we relate to the world. A profound sense of gratitude filled the space, bringing a sense of spaciousness and contentment. Experiencing true gratitude shifted perspectives on consumption, allowing us to appreciate the abundance already present with fresh eyes. The session also offered a reflective look into our habits—both those we consider “friends” and those we’re ready to let go of. Together, we uncovered the beliefs and assumptions driving these habits, many shaped by systemic pressures around productivity and busyness. In this way, we realized how much we mirror the systems we inhabit. We are deeply grateful for this inspiring group—openness, trust, and willingness to share made this experience so powerful. Thank you to everyone involved, especially to our facilitators, Grattan Donnelly and Liane Stephan. What a humbling and enriching journey!

If marketing is a key driver of behaviour that leads to ecological overshoot, can it be used to reverse it? Each year, we collectively use up more resources than the planet can regenerate. A new paper analyses the role of marketing in driving the human behaviour that leads to ecological overshoot.   Tamsin Walker sat down with Phoebe Barnard who co-authored the paper to discuss the history of our collective consumer behaviour, what role marketing could have in slowing overshoot and what it takes to reach a social tipping point.   Phoebe is a fascinating guests who wears many hats: she is a biodiversity and climate scientist, systems and policy strategist, societal futurist, writer and film producer. She is also a campaign advisor at the Global EverGreening Alliance, convenor of the Global Restoration Collaborative, Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington, and Researcher at the University of Cape Town. Go to the shownotes of the episode to learn more about Phoebe.   You can find the Inner Green Deal podcast on any of the major platforms. 🌟 Starting a New Journey with Our Mindfulness-Based Sustainable Transformation (MBST) Cohort! 🌟 We feel joy and gratitude after our first session of the MBST course yesterday! It was a wonderful beginning for this new cohort. We have such a diverse group of participants joining us from all over the world, including Finland, the US, Belgium, Germany, Nicaragua, the Netherlands, and Colombia. It’s inspiring to see a mix of highly experienced individuals alongside those newer to this journey, all coming together with openness and wisdom. In our first session, we explored the conscious and unconscious mind, and how creating space in our minds, lives, and for others is essential, and this message came across clearly. It’s uplifting to witness this likeminded group, deeply concerned about the health of our planet, yet optimistic and excited about creating a supportive ecosystem together! 🌱 If you're curious and want to join this journey with us, we invite you to our info webinar on November 4 from 6 to 7 PM CET, where you can ask your questions about the MBST Teacher Training Programme starting next year. If you feel called to be part of this journey, contact us or visit our website for more information about the course. We’re proud to share that our co-founder Jeroen Janss is sharing our Community Handprint Project at the #IDG Summit! This inspiring concept uses the inner side of the hand to symbolize inner development, while the outer side of the hand represents the positive actions we take in the world. Together, these inner and outer efforts can transform our society. In contrast to the footprint, the Handprint focus to the positive change we can create. It’s a call to take responsibility for our agency and actively contribute to shaping a better future. Join us as a community in this movement for collective transformation! #IDGSummit #HandprintProject #PositiveImpact #CommunityAction #InnerAndOuterChange #FootprintToHandprint

✌️Amazing to present our Community Handprint project - now a UN Climate Change Innovation Project at the Inner Development Goals Summit! What if the could empower the 630 IDG hubs around the world with a simple tool to mobilise local communities: inner development (inner handprint) for outer action (outer handprint)! As we explored yesterday: - The Community Handprint approach cultivates collective action that contributes to positive change in the world. - It contrasts with the ‘Footprint’ approach which traditionally focuses on the negative impact of individuals. - By integrating the handprint concept in city initiatives, governmental initiatives (#EuropeanClimatePact) and organisations, we can mobilise millions of people around the world and accelerate climate action. - The Handprint offering includes ways to mobilise staff in organisations and communities, an opportunity to introduce learning to cultivate agency (the feeling that what I do matters), community building, ideation, evaluation and celebration, to name a few. Bringing people in nature is likely to be one of the best ways to engage people and evoke the care we need to inspire action. Feeling very grateful to have given the chance to present to such a great audience at the IDG Summit. And to co-create the approach further during the day with the wonderful Caitlin Vopni, CR Hibbs, Jannik, José Namén, Matthew Law, Nina, Valentine Goblet and last but not least Verónica Alcocer, the first lady of Colombia. Amazing what emerged when we walked out of the conference room and stepped into nature! Jannik Kaiser: curious how it went online! Thank you Massamba Thioye for your vision, for embodying the values of caring, sharing and daring and for leading the integrating of inner and outer at the highest stage of climate action. Thank you 🦜 Laila Martins for bringing this vision to life. The compliment of Massamba: "This was the best workshop I have ever attended" goes to you! Thank you Jamie Bristow for your pioneering work over many years to integrate inner development into policy - without you I don't think we would be having this day together. And thank you to the entire team of creators who contributed in so many ways to this day: Jannik Kaiser, Rachael Jacobs, Christoph Schönherr, Liane Stephan, Lieven Callewaert of Yes & More. And thank you Jan Artem Henriksson and Katharina Moser for your leadership! Special thanks to Alex Alexandrou and Maria Sokolova Alexandrou of United Potential for their creative vision, bringing the Community Handprint concept to life through such beautiful images! We are only at the beginning and a lot more innovation and help is needed to realise the potential of this project. But this week we took a big step forward and after many months of hard work, we are celebrating this step! Curious? Want to join our UN project team? Do you have ideas or resources that can help us bring this to the next level? Then contact me or write a comment below :).
