PhD Update June-Oct 2024: Finishing year 1 🎓 Often I get so caught up in my to-do list that I overlook all that I’ve already ticked off. Theresa Heins brilliant workshop at the “Defending Democracy Conference” reminded me that it’s not only important to appreciate small wins, but to communicate them regularly. So here are 3 things I’m happy to have “ticked off” since my last post in June: 📝 Submitting Two Articles: With the close of my first PhD year on Anti-Government Extremism, I submitted two articles to academic journals. I’m now fully immersed in revisions to hopefully shout about my first ever peer reviewed article in the near future! 📊 Learning from Industry: In September, I attended the Tech Against Terrorism Europe Workshop at British Embassy Berlin (hence the picture). It was a fantastic chance to broaden my knowledge on transnationally regulating and combating terrorist content online. An added bonus was reconnecting with the #TASM community and chatting with Sophia Rothut. Thank you for pulling this workshop together! 🗣️ Translating Research into Practice: I presented the national security implications of my findings to representatives from the state government of Schleswig-Holstein in October and the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) in September. The discussions underscored the need for interdisciplinary dialogue to counter the increasing instrumentalisation of disinformation in extremist milieus as a hybrid threat to democracy. With year 2 already underway, I am in the midst of preparing for some very exciting new opportunities. I hope to remember to not just tick them off but also take time to appreciate and share them. Shoutout to Jonathan Collins for holding me accountable!

Wir freuen uns, den ersten ISPK Policy Brief aus einer Reihe von mehreren Arbeitspapieren als Ergebnis des vorangestellten Workshops zum Kiel International Seapower Symposium 2024 mit dem Generalthema „Re-Learning War: Lessons from the Black Sea“ zu veröffentlichen. Der Workshop wurde von dem GIDS gemeinsam mit dem Institut für Sicherheitspolitik an der Universität Kiel (ISPK) am 20. Juni 2024 ausgerichtet. Die Themen der Artikel wurden sämtlich im Workshop diskutiert und einem Peer-Review-Verfahren unterzogen. Alle Artikel werden parallel als ISPK Policy Brief und in dem Format „#GIDSstatement“ des GIDS veröffentlicht. In ihrem Artikel „Worlds Collide: Diverging Interests, Provocations, Conflicts, and Challenges in the High North“ beschreibt Rachael G. vom George C. Marshall Center for Security Studies die schwierigen sicherheitspolitischen Bedingungen des „High North“. Um eine effektive Abschreckung zu erreichen, bedürfe es einem durchdachten Ansatz, der eine sorgfältig ausgewogene Verteidigungspolitik, strategische Planung und operative Fähigkeiten umfasst, die den einzigartigen Herausforderungen der Region gerecht werden. Das Papier steht ab sofort auf unserer Website unter www.ispk.uni-kiel.de zum Abruf bereit. -- We are pleased to publish the first ISPK Policy Brief in a series of several working papers resulting from a workshop conducted prior to the 2024 Kiel International Seapower Symposium on the topic ‘Re-Learning War: Lessons from the Black Sea’. The workshop was co-hosted by the GIDS and the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University (ISPK) on 20 June 2024. The topic of each paper was discussed during the workshop. All articles have been peer-reviewed and will also be published in the GIDS’ ‘#GIDSstatement’ format. In her article “Worlds Collide: Diverging Interests, Provocations, Conflicts, and Challenges in the High North”, Rachael G. from the George C. Marshall Center for Security Studies describes the arduous security conditions of the “High North”. Achieving effective deterrence demands a thoughtful approach that must integrate carefully balanced defense policy, strategic planning, and operational capabilities suited to the unique challenges of the region. 🚢🌍 Kiel International Seapower Symposium 2024 – (Re-) Learning War A month ago, we had the honor of hosting #KISS24 in Kiel. This year, in collaboration with the German Institute for Defence and Strategic Studies (GIDS), our topic was “(Re-) Learning War.” We kicked off with a separate expert workshop focusing on three critical maritime areas: the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea and the High North. These sessions delved into current developments and provided valuable insights into future trends which will be published online as a paper series. The evening reception at the Kieler Yacht Club concluded the day perfectly, offering excellent networking opportunities and continuing the day's discussions in a relaxed setting. KISS is one of Europe's premier seapower symposia, fostering synergy between academia, the military, and participants from various countries. This year was no exception, as demonstrated by the diverse representation shown in the graph below. Here are some key highlights: ⚓ Insights on the Black Sea Conflict: Our panel provided an in-depth analysis of Ukrainian defense tactics, the geopolitical implications of the Montreux Convention, and Russia's ongoing aggression. The discussions underscored the urgency of strong partnerships and support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for clear stances from NATO and the EU. ⚓ Strengthening NATO Bonds: Celebrating 75 years of NATO, we reflected on the alliance's resilience and the deep trust among member states. Despite potential political changes, particularly in the US, the commitment to collective defense remains unwavering. ⚓ Adapting to New Challenges: The symposium highlighted the evolving landscape of global maritime security. Topics included the strategic impact of Finland and Sweden joining NATO, the complexities of military logistics, and the importance of adaptable production locations. Looking ahead, KISS 2024 emphasized the importance of continued cooperation and innovation in maritime security. Further insights from the conference will be represented through papers by workshop participants, providing valuable resources for those interested in maritime strategy and security policy. We look forward to #KISS25 and another round of enriching discussions!

Sebastian Bruns und Jeremy Stöhs zeigen in ihrem neuen Artikel bei War on the Rocks, dass das Mittelmeer wieder zu einer Zone intensiven Wettbewerbs geworden ist. Aufgrund der Rückkehr von Großmachtrivalitäten und revisionistischer Akteure müssen westliche Marinen sich auf intensive Konflikte vorbereiten und Abschreckungsstrategien entwickeln. Erhöhte Marineinvestitionen in Nordafrika und Spannungen zwischen der Türkei und Griechenland unterstreichen die strategische Bedeutung des Mittelmeers für die globale Sicherheit. „Verfassungsschutzrelevante Delegitimierung des Staates“ als neuer Beobachtungsgegenstand der Sicherheitsbehörden – Genese eines neuen Phänomens oder alter Rechtsextremismus in neuem Gewand?
