Sweet news for our biscuit and wafer lovers! ✨ Bahlsen Group and Klim have joined forces ✨ Together, we’re advancing regenerative farming practices and working to reduce emissions across Bahlsen’s supply chain, starting with one of their most important ingredients: wheat 🌾 ◆ Our approach The collaboration kicked off in 2024 with Hedwigsburger Okermühle GmbH, a mill that has been supplying Bahlsen with wheat for over a century, and local farmers who provide wheat to Hedwigsburger Okermühle. In 2025, we aim to expand this initiative. ◆ Why it’s important Wheat is more than just a key ingredient - it’s the foundation of Bahlsen’s biscuit production and a critical lever for reducing agricultural emissions. Farmers in this project will apply practices like cover crops, direct seeding, and diversify their crop rotation. Hier passiert die Magie 💚 Seit 6 Monaten bin ich nun bei Senken und unterstütze Unternehmen dabei, in die besten Klimaschutzprojekte der Welt zu investieren. Um die Restemissionen in der Klimabilanz zu neutralisieren oder einfach, um mit verfügbarem Budget maximalen Impact als Beitrag zu leisten. Dabei ist das Thema für jedes Unternehmen, mit dem ich spreche wahnsinnig emotional und zwar kontrovers emotional. Auf der einen Seite ist das Thema CO2-Zertifikate immer noch (leider häufig zu recht) negativ behaftet. Das hat unterschiedliche Gründe, auf die ich heute nicht eingehe. Vorherrschende Emotionen sind: Angst vor Greenwashing Vorwürfen und Skandalen, Überforderung bei der Auswahl der Projekte, Verzweiflung bei internen Budgetkämpfen und weitere. Und auf der anderen Seite sind da die positiven Emotionen. Die Überzeugung und Motivation, mit guten Projekten einen wahren Beitrag zu leisten, dadurch, dass CO2 aus der Atmosphäre entfernt und gespeichert wird, oder vermieden wird, es überhaupt auszustoßen. Die Begeisterung, wenn man versteht, was für große Wirkung teilweise kleine Hebel haben. Und was für großartige Co-Benefits Klimaschutzprojekte über die reine CO2-Entfernung hinaus haben können, zB in Bezug auf die Biodiversität unseres Planeten. Immer wenn ich mit meinen Kunden darüber spreche, funkeln die Augen. 💫 Denn genau da geht es um die Magie und nicht nur um reine Kosten-Nutzen-Faktoren von Klimaschutzprojekten (die es natürlich auch braucht, aber darum geht es mir heute nicht). Um so dankbarer bin ich, dass ich letzte Woche die Chance hatte, einen unserer Projektpartner, oder genauer: eins der Projekte eines unseres Projektpartners Klim selbst besuchen und die Magie erleben zu können. Ich konnte Landwirt Johannes auf seinem Betrieb in Brandenburg besuchen und er zeigte uns verschiedene Äcker, auf dem er verschiedene Methoden der regenerativen Landwirtschaft anwendet und erklärte uns alles, was wir wissen wollten. Und wer mich kennt, weiß, dass ich viele Fragen habe 😀 Es war zwar eiskalt, sich bei fast null Grad auf einem windigen Acker rumzutreiben, aber das war es allemal wert: An gesunder Erde riechen, den Unterschied zwischen Untersaat und Zwischenfrucht lernen, sich die verschiedenen Wurzeln der Frucht ansehen und verstehen, wie Rinder dabei helfen, die Bodenqualität zu erhöhen, war echt beeindruckend. Ich kann nun also nicht nur sagen "Ich war da", sondern live berichten von der Magie, die auf unseren Äckern passiert. Denn alles beginnt im Boden, wie #klim so schön sagt. Und ja - wenn das Wetter im November so grau ist, dann muss zumindest die Klamotte ein wenig Farbe in die Welt bringen! 😎

Field Check 🌾 A challenge in agriculture is regulating soil temperature. Direct seeding and ground cover offer valuable advantages in managing these extremes: 🌡️ Temperature management Soils that heat up above 37°C can negatively impact soil life and increase evaporation. Once temperatures hit 55°C, all the available water in the soil evaporates, and at over 60°C, soil life starts to die off. Direct seeding and using ground cover can help keep those temperature spikes in check. 🌱 Till vs. no-till A side-by-side comparison shows that, even with the same air temperature, tilled soil can reach temperatures of up to 61°C. In contrast, direct seeding with ground cover helps maintain soil temperatures that match the air temperature. 💧Preserving water resources Keeping soil temperatures lower significantly reduces evaporation, which helps retain moisture in the soil and leads to more stable crop yields. Overall, ground cover is a sustainable strategy that saves water, protects soil fertility, and lowers the risk of crop failures due to extreme temperatures. Klim’s insetting and offsetting projects support regenerative practices that improve yields and enhance yield stability by mitigating the impacts of extreme weather events.
