Happy Friday everyone! There was an interesting article yesterday in the heise online regarding the German dependency to proprietary software. (https://lnkd.in/eHfuZ9j6) I agree to large parts with the article, but it is missing one important key. Support of #OpenSource projects. Already, the cost without Open Source Software would be 3,5 times the amount companies are spending on software. So the benefit is obvious. However, not much support is coming back to the Open Source Community. So there need to be a change in company mindset to either support Open Source projects directly or via companies, who are supporting Open Source projects. Bob Killen from the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and me did a talk a couple of weeks ago at #KubeCon #CloudNativeCon in Salt Lake City about the benefits and possible ways to get involved into Open Source. I also did a similar talk at ContainerDays this year, and we also published the recording with slightly different focus (https://lnkd.in/eVRQMSGq) You can also get the Slides here: https://lnkd.in/eqchSx9C Also at Kubermatic we follow a fully fledged Open Source / Open Core strategy and this helps not only the company and the engineers but also our customers. Sadly, there is also a lot of "greenwashing" happening towards Open Source. I recently stumbled on the Open Source strategy of various Big Consulting companies, and basically their Open Source investment is close to zero if it is not a customer project. Although, the benefit manic fold from Open Source software like Kubernetes. My personal opinion towards this is, I would never work nor employ a software company, which is not supporting OSS development with resources or at least money.
