🌟⚽ After a crazy weekend of high-scoring games, celebrations, and heartbreaks in the German Bundesliga, we kick off the week with news that shows football is scoring big for the planet too: UK football’s Greener Game program! 🌱 Football has always been about more than just the game—it’s about community, connection, and creating a legacy. The English Football Association’s #GreenerGame initiative, in partnership with E.ON Next, is a brilliant step toward a sustainable future. Grassroots clubs across England are reducing costs and emissions with energy audits, solar panels, and heat pumps, in an effort to ensure that the heart of football—its community—is protected for generations to come 💚 But the game doesn’t stop here. The next goal for football must be to embrace nature-based solutions that go beyond energy efficiency to restore and protect biodiversity. By enhancing natural ecosystems, clubs can not only mitigate climate impacts but also enrich the environments where players and fans thrive. ⚽ How do you see your industry leading the way in sustainability and biodiversity? 🌊🐟 Yesterday was World Fisheries Day - a day to celebrate fisheries as the backbone of coastal livelihoods and food security for billions. Yet they are facing mounting challenges 🏔️ ❗ Overfishing, climate change, and habitat destruction are reshaping fish populations and driving shifts in their ranges, putting both ecosystems and communities at risk. Despite the ocean being our planet’s largest carbon sink, marine solutions often take a back seat at international climate negotiations. At COP29 in Baku, for example, ocean-based climate actions were sidelined from the main agenda, though advocates are working tirelessly at side events to keep marine issues in the spotlight. The potential for ocean-based solutions is immense: from restoring blue carbon ecosystems like mangroves and seagrasses to expanding offshore wind energy and decarbonising shipping. Yet, these solutions require sustainable financing and global cooperation to scale. With only 14% of countries’ climate pledges (NDCs) including renewable energy measures like offshore wind, much more must be done to integrate oceans into climate action. So in honour of World Fisheries Day, let’s remember the interconnectedness of our oceans, climate, and communities. By supporting sustainable practices and amplifying marine issues in climate dialogues, we can safeguard fisheries and the ecosystems they depend on 🌎💙 Read more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eZ9ZBkhh #biodiversity #BlueCarbon #ClimateChange #COP29

❄️ As the first snow falls in many parts of Germany, it’s hard not to dream of a cozy white Christmas and hot chocolate by the fire 🔥🍫 But climate change is threatening our snow-filled traditions! This year, Japan’s Mount Fuji experienced its first-ever recorded snow-free October — a clear sign that our weather norms are already shifting. This late snowfall — which came more than a month later than usual — is a direct consequence of rising global temperatures. Warmer air means that snow, which typically forms at higher altitudes, is now falling as rain instead. This disruption affects everything from mountain ecosystems to the global water cycle, which in turn impacts biodiversity 🐻❄️🐧 According to recent studies, human-caused climate change is the main driver of shrinking snowpacks across the Northern Hemisphere, leading to unpredictable weather patterns and earlier snowmelt 🫠 While we may still get those snowy winters for now, the frequency and timing of these events could continue to change. Now is the time to act, to protect not only our sentimentality but also creatures like alpine marmots, snowshoe hares, and snowmen, all of whom rely on cold, snowy environments for survival 🐇☃️ Read more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eZEKURPn And get in touch with us at kuyua to find out how your company can help keep the dream of a snowy winter wonderland a reality 💚

At the 41st UBi - Unternehmen Biologische Vielfalt meeting, our co-founder Tobias had the opportunity to share the kuyua perspective on biodiversity reporting 💡👇 With regulations like the #CSRD pushing companies to act, it needs to be easier and for them to do so, and the outcome more impactful. But luckily, using the Michael Otto Foundation’s guide and kuyua’s own AI-powered tools 🤖, businesses can turn complex reporting into meaningful action for nature! 💪 Reporting isn’t just a chore, it’s a chance to bring biodiversity into the heart of business. So, kuyua’s mission? Helping companies go beyond ticking boxes ✅ and embrace nature-positive strategies 🌳✨ We want to pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future 🌍🔗 Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection Bundesamt für Naturschutz Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action UBi - Unternehmen Biologische Vielfalt NABU e.V. #biodiversity #ClimateChange #NatureBasedSolutions

🧠💡 Did you know? Chimpanzees have incredible social memory—they can recognise friends and family even after decades apart! While animals like dolphins, elephants, and dogs often rely on sound or scent to recognise others, a new study in PNAS shows that chimps, like humans, can remember faces for years 👉 https://lnkd.in/dBUg4MAx Watch this heartwarming reunion as a chimp greets his human caretakers with joy and excitement after years apart 💛 https://lnkd.in/ejJB7aqk #biodiversity #chimpanzee

A "meaningful" and ESRS E4-compliant materiality assessment: - Considers nature as the core topic of ecological sustainability - Is site-specific - Examines potential and actual impacts, dependencies, and resulting opportunities and risks - Follows an objective and transparent approach These are the key messages from the Umweltstiftung Michael Otto (UMO) project on CSRD reporting and ESRS E4 on nature and biodiversity, as presented by Karl Philip Lohmann and kuyua co-founder Tobias Wildner last week in Berlin. A practical guide for companies on this topic will be available in the next few days—reach out to us to be the first to get your copy! #CSRD #doublemateriality #biodiversity

Every event like COP16 is both a milestone and a deadline. For countries, industries, and companies like kuyua. Deadline: In 2022, committed countries agreed to save 30% of land and sea for nature, but only 24 have followed through with a plan, with 170 more states failing to submit plans to preserve nature before the COP16 deadline. Milestone: The goal to protect and restore one-third of the Earth by 2030 made global investors (e.g. banks) pursue the “nature-positive” finance objective. The problem was - and still is - that biodiversity proved to be a subject much more difficult to measure, address, and “monetize” compared to, say, climate change. This is where Kuyua has a humble part to play. Kuyua’s nature data analytics pivot around biodiversity and related metrics. We help compliance-driven and action-driven companies determine the impact drivers that put pressure on biodiversity, as well as the associated risks the affected ecosystems may pose. Furthermore, we offer actionable plans aiming to minimize negative effects for ecosystems and maximize benefits from nature services. Last chance to register for the CSRD Reporting and Biodiversity event tomorrow, 17 October, in Berlin. The Umweltstiftung Michael Otto (UMO) initiated a cross industry project in early 2024 to support the establishment of nature/biodiversity reporting, specifically for the CSRD. The outcome of this project will now be presented. kuyua’s Co-Founder and Sustainable Finance & Regulation Expert at Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) Tobias Wildner will present some of the key findings of the project: “When done in a structured, transparent way and supported by the latest technology, corporate nature reporting can be sensible, feasible, and near-effortless”. This message resonates with the event’s tagline by UMO: “The linkage of investments to ecological criteria and the corresponding adaptation of business models is an important step for the preservation of biodiversity. This requires companies to be transparent about the ecological impacts and dependencies of their business activities." You’ll get great insights and practical views from some amazing speakers, including: Alexander Bonde Prof. Dr. Johannes Merck Carmen Auer Lutz Diederichs Jan-Niclas Gesenhues Jörg-Andreas Krüger Dr. Katharina Reuter Heide Schulte-Beckhausen And of course Karl Philip Lohmann, who created and managed the entire project. #kuyua #UMO #CSRD #ESRS #sustainablefinance #sustainability #naturereporting #biodiversity #nature #event

The recent outbreak of devastating hurricanes, such as Helene and Milton in the USA, showed the vulnerability of people, nature, and the economy in the face of severe weather and climate change threats. By no means implying that one is more important than the other, kuyua aims to highlight how each category - be it natural or anthropogenic or mixed - is affected: 🏃 People. One of the biggest tragedies around natural disasters is their power to take lives. Hurricane Helene took the lives of at least 230 people. Hurricane Milton’s death toll is 23 people (and counting), six of whom were killed by a tornado that sprung out of the hurricane. 🌳 Nature. When a hurricane approaches land, it brings tremendous damage to coastal areas and impacts the natural environments, threatening all wildlife and affecting all elements of the local ecosystems. Low-lying areas get flooded due to storm surges, as sea level can rise up to 30 feet. Powerful ocean water surges can move boulders and other big objects. High winds can topple trees. Nature’s recovery in the aftermath may take from weeks and months to decades (especially for forests and marine ecosystems). 💲 Economy. According to estimates (source: https://lnkd.in/eRVCZST3), total damage and economic loss from Milton are expected to reach $180 billion. The holistic accounts of the loss from Helene have recently skyrocketed to $250 billion. Both total roughly $300-$400 billion, i.e. up to 2% of the GDP of the USA. Milton left 2 million households and businesses without power. And Helene managed to disrupt the supply chain in the semiconductor industry, as floods shut down Sibelco facilities providing high-purity quartz - a critical ingredient for the manufacture of the silicon wafers that are turned into computer chips (Source: https://lnkd.in/e6Zm9izM). 🌀 Some of the losses and threats are difficult to classify let alone measure. An eloquent illustration is hurricane Helene’s impacts on NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. NCEI maintains one of the most important archives on the planet (and about the planet), with comprehensive oceanic, atmospheric and geophysical data dating back to the 1700s. NCEI archives over 229 terabytes of data monthly from over 130 observing platforms. The majority of the data stewardship services became unavailable due to the impacts of Helene. Luckily, the data holdings were safe, and so where the people (source: https://lnkd.in/e5Dja67y). What other aspects within the aforementioned categories are worth mentioning? #kuyua #news #hurricane #milton #helene #nature #economy #damage #climatechange
