Continuing the story of laboratory design… The journey to where we are today wasn’t straightforward. Before we invested in our own machinery, we spent years producing furniture with the help of subcontractors. It was a time of learning, adapting, and understanding what it really takes to create something that’s not only functional but exceptional. And then came the bold decision – to bring color into the sterile world of laboratory environments. It was nothing short of a revolution. I still vividly remember the reactions at the Frankfurt trade fair, where we unveiled our vision. Passersby would stop and stare at our stand, their faces reflecting surprise, curiosity, and even delight. It truly looked like something from another world – playful, different, and full of a story designed to inspire anyone who entered the space. Our colleague Breda, with her sharp marketing instincts, watched both the visitors and our team closely throughout the event. She later told me, “Marko, once again, you’ve proven what we’ve always known – you don’t just step out of the ordinary, you leave an impression that lasts.” And she was right. Our stand wasn’t just a display; it was a statement. With its vibrant colors and unique design, it told a story of innovation, creativity, and a belief that laboratory spaces can be so much more than just functional. They can inspire. That trade fair was a turning point for us. With colors, we painted not just a memory of that event but a bold entry into the ranks of serious laboratory furniture manufacturers. From that moment, we were no longer just participants. We were contenders, equipping labs across numerous European countries and setting a new standard for what a lab can look and feel like. It wasn’t just about the machinery we invested in or the designs we created. It was about how we dared to challenge the norm – to bring life, color, and personality into a space that’s traditionally been seen as cold and clinical. Looking back, I see those moments as proof of what’s possible when you combine vision, courage, and a bit of playfulness. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹? The first time I stepped into a laboratory I had helped design, I felt something unusual. It wasn’t the chemicals in the air or the cold gleam of the steel surfaces. It was the feeling of being in a place where the best versions of people – researchers, innovators, scientists – could thrive. I remember one researcher walking in for the first time. His eyes scanned the ergonomic workstations, the optimally placed equipment, and the cozy corner for relaxation. He simply said, “This is a place where great things can happen.” That moment affirmed what I had long suspected – a laboratory is not just a space. It’s a tool. A well-designed lab means a researcher doesn’t have to think about how to get from a sample to the equipment or where to store results. It means the space supports them – from ergonomic work surfaces that protect health and comfort to logical workflows that enable speed and precision. When designing a laboratory, I always start with the user. What does their daily routine look like? Where do they pause to think? Where will they reach for that pipette in a burst of creativity? All of this matters. It’s equally important for the lab to include elements that build community: a brainstorming corner, a space to unwind, or an area where they can share an idea that just took root. A tip? Always begin with the people. Ask them where their current space holds them back, what would improve their work, and what frustrates them the most. Then design a space that’s not just “functional” but one that inspires. A properly designed laboratory isn’t just a tool for work – it’s a space where ideas are born, grow, and transform into solutions that can change the world. If it’s arranged in a way that allows researchers to be their best selves, then we’ve nailed it. And if you ask me whether this takes effort, I can only say: of course, it does. Yesterday, we participated in the ‘Career Fair’ event at the Secondary School of Woodworking and Forestry in Maribor, where we introduced high school and university students to opportunities for practical training and employment. Our team member, Matic, a former student of the school, was thrilled to present all the possibilities for collaboration. We’re proud to offer young people internships, apprenticeships, and student work opportunities. But the most valuable thing we provide isn’t just tasks and challenges—it’s the warm and supportive team members who welcome young talents, share their knowledge, and integrate them into our team. This way, internships and apprenticeships become truly enriching experiences for future professionals. Thank you to the SLGŠ team for making this meeting possible!
