Yesterday, at Frankfurt's impact investing roundtable (thanks again for organizing Lothar Jakab!) we were discussing how impact investing can move further into the mainstream and attract more capital from "traditional", not necessarily impact-motivated sources. To do so, it is critical to be able to demonstrate that impact investing does not only make sense environmentally and socially, but also financially. While I do not share the belief that every impact investment must deliver market rate returns, it is crucial to show that the cost of "not acting" is way higher than of acting. By pricing in externalities, impact investing would reach above market rate returns easily. Today, I stumbled upon this nature article (thanks Alan Fortuny Sicart!) that proves this point so clearly, showing the change in income per capita of different climate scenarios: "the world economy is committed to an income reduction of 19% within the next 26 years independent of future emission choices [...]. These damages already outweigh the mitigation costs required to limit global warming to 2 °C by sixfold over this near-term time frame and thereafter diverge strongly dependent on emission choices." https://lnkd.in/edr5Ajhi The question remains how to transfer such research findings into action though. How do we free ourselves and especially global decision-makers and asset allocators/owners/managers from the extreme short-term thinking and start investing into the things that do not only make most sense ethically, but also financially?

And using data for a brighter future is the topic of an article in our FRANKly magazine from Fulbrighter and founder Jan Moellmann. Together with his co-founders, they try to measure sustainability where sustainability effects actually occur and then to use this data to empower impact-driven management and investment decisions. "At the end of the day, though, it is not about the technology or data itself, but about using it for the right purposes. We need to stop wasting our talent, time and resources working on things that will only benefit one’s own bank account. We need to use technology and business to work on the things that matter.
