Engineering takes hard work & dedication

m+p international & Acoustic Research Systems (ARS) are proud to announce the successful delivery & installation of the next generation of Acoustic testing systems at the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council’s RAL Space site in Oxfordshire. The Direct Field Acoustic Noise (DFAN) test system is truly the first of its kind in the UK, with capabilities of producing an incoherent & diffuse sound field to simulate real world space launch environments, once only achievable in reverberant chambers. DFAN marks a new age in space testing, with ARS’s purpose built Neutron 104 Speakers ability to handle the stress of high intensity acoustic noise (as seen in launch environments) combined with m+p’s Acoustic Control software system, capable of controlling user defined acoustic environment profiles in the octave domain. With m+p’s sophisticated control algorithms & super responsive Controller hardware, RAL Space is placed at the forefront of space testing in Europe. #expertsinvibration #acoustictesting #DFAN #vibration #loudspeaker #acousticcontrol #acousticcontroller #dataacquisition #octaves #spacetesting #digitalsignalanalysis #OASPL  #soundpressure #microphone Photo Credits: STFC RAL Space, m+p International

m+p international goes wolf hunting with Turnstone Guitars! “Wolf tones” to be more precise… Recently, m+p international UK has been working with world class Luthiers, Turnstone Guitars to perform modal tests on unstrung guitar bodies in order to study the performance of internal structural bracing. Since 2015, Turnstone have been painstakingly handcrafting the most beautiful guitars out of a range of premium timber including 5,000 year old tone wood! To ensure each guitar creates the perfect sound, a critical process is to tap the finished guitar body to ensure that no natural resonances coincide with guitar notes. If this were to happen, the note that coincides with a natural resonance would boom or sound disproportionally loud compared to the others, producing what is known in the trade as a “Wolf tone”. Traditionally this is done by hand, using the skilled luthiers ear to determine its natural resonance and if it was out out of tune, then they would have to adjust the structural stiffness by modifying the bracing on the backboard. With such a high demand for precision, we used PCBs tried and tested 086C02 impact hammer and 352A24 accelerometer (with consideration to mass loading) and measured triggered blocks with the m+p Analyzer from taps on the sound bridge mounting. Making use of the handy trigger level tool, to quickly ascertain trigger level settings, we were able to produce initial “unstrung” measurements in no time at all. We look forward to the next steps in testing the finished product! For all the guitar fans out there, I would definitely recommend visiting Turnstones website. 📢 Knowledge that Resonates💡: Why does PSD have g2/Hz units? Another seemingly simple subject this morning, although we find this detail is so often overlooked and never really taught! So long as the test is running, no questions are asked, yet it’s important to know. If you measured the spectrum of a signal of a given RMS with three identical, calibrated systems, but each running with different frequency resolution settings, you would end up with three spectrums all showing pretty much the same RMS.  However, if you overlayed the plots, the traces would confusingly appear to be at different levels, albeit with  the same overall shape. This can be misleading when analyzing and comparing data.  The fact is, those traces taken with higher frequency resolution have more spectral lines of resolution to distribute the overall signal over and therefore each spectral line has a lower amplitude compared to a measurement taken with low resolution which has fewer spectral lines to distribute the signal over. A common analogy is sharing a jug of drink amongst different numbers of cups at a party. The Jug contains a finite RMS of signal but with fewer cups (lines of resolution), each cup gets more signal. The power spectral density plot is the answer to this problem as it normalizes the resolution out of the equation. If we take those three measurements and firstly square them (as is the convention with power measurements) to get an amplitude of g2, then divide the result by the resolution at which the measurement was taken, this gives us g2/Hz. The resultant plot will then show the three measurements as near identical and much easier to compare and analyze, with the area under the line representing overall RMS. Spectrums and PSDs can be compared on an RMS basis but for further information on converting between Sine amplitude and PSD, then please refer to our website: https://lnkd.in/eFPSK9GE   #expertsinvibration #vibrationtesting #vibrationtest #vibration #shakertesting #vibrationcontrol #vibrationcontroller #dataacquisition #digitalsignalanalysis
