Fundamental research in two key areas of modern biology

Info

The Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics (MPI-IE) in Freiburg is an interdisciplinary research institution that conducts basic research in two key areas of modern biology. Immunobiology is concerned with the ways multicellular organisms defend themselves against pathogens. Scientists of the institute study the evolutionary origins and the development of lymphoid organs and immune effector cells, the function of antigen receptors, and the genetic basis of host-pathogen interactions. This information underpins efforts to better diagnose and treat immunodeficiency, inflammatory diseases and tumors. Epigenetics is the study of inheritable traits that are not caused by changes in the underlying DNA sequence. Epigenetic mechanisms are crucial for the organization and utilization of our genetic information. Since the susceptibility to diseases can be promoted by epigenetic dysfunction, epigenetic research has far-reaching implications for diagnosis and therapy of human disease. The MPI-IE with its more than 300 employees currently hosts 13 research groups, which are supported by state-of-the-art scientific facilities. For the training of young scientists, we offer an international PhD program, the International Max Planck Research School for Molecular and Cellular Biology (IMPRS-IEM). • Say “Hi” to our todays #WomenInScience: Nina Cabezas Wallscheid. Nina is one of our Group Leaders currently relocating her lab to Department of Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST), ETH Zürich. 🩸Her lab focuses on understanding and maintaining a healthy hematopoietic system through dormancy regulation, integrating omics analyses and bioinformatics. 🥕Currently, the team wants to understand how dietary elements like vitamin A could influence stem cell fate and blood system health. In her interview, she talks about her leadership approach and mentoring the next generation of scientists. Nina climbed Kilimanjaro. 🧗♀️ From this experience, she draws interesting parallels between the scientific pursuit and mountain climbing. Read here: https://lnkd.in/ewnaGJYJ 📌 February 11 marked the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a global celebration that shines a light on the groundbreaking achievements of female scientists both throughout history and today. This day also serves as a powerful reminder of the persistent gender disparities within STEM across the globe. In the upcoming weeks, until March 8 (International Women’s Day), we will regularly share stories from our female staff members. Through a series of interviews, we’ve delved into their journeys into science & exploring what drives their passion for working in their fields. #womeninstem #stem #mint

  • Today, February 11th, is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. It was established by the United Nations in 2015. 2025 marks the 10th anniversary – to recognize and promote the importance of female participation in #STEM 🎉 In celebration, we showcase our female staff members. We believe in the power of role models and hope that showcasing successful women in science encourages more women to pursue scientific careers. With our »Women in Science« interview series, we hope to inspire young people. Read more about their journey into science, the hurdles they faced or how exciting life as scientist can be. Part of the series are Valerie Hilgers, Nina Cabezas Wallscheid, Katarzyna Sikora, Paloma Martzloff, Haneul Yoo, Kalina Świst-Rosowska Here are some quotes: 💬 »The timing is never perfect. But having kids during my postdoc was a terrible idea. But somehow, it turned out okay… even though it almost didn’t.« 💬 »Seek out environments that offer mutual growth, ensuring that while you contribute, you're also receiving something enriching in return, avoiding the trap of an extended stay without advancement.« 💬 »…this particular moment, when I realize it, I'm probably the only person in the world who knows this answer or who's actually seeing it or who's showing it for the first time. This is an amazing feeling.« Check out the interviews here: https://lnkd.in/eSnWN8cZ #womeninscience #womeninstem #february11 #maxplanck

  • From January 27-31, 2025, we celebrated International Animal Technician Week for the fifth year in a row. 🤯 Inspired by AALAS, our “Tech Weeks” recognize and appreciate the important work of our animal technicians and all employees working in the animal facility. We firmly believe that their hard work and dedication to animal welfare is one of the backbones of the institute’s research successes! What started five years ago as a small event for the facility soon expanded to include the entire Institute. Over the years, we have introduced exciting activities that showcase the incredible work in our husbandry, provide the team with additional learning opportunities, and foster interaction between our technicians and scientists. Here are some of the ideas we’ve come up with over the years (feel free to steal them! 😎): ➡️ »Do you know your animal technician?«  A fun quiz where researchers and colleagues could try to identify their animal technician through anonymous profiles. ➡️ »Book your veterinarian«  An opportunity for animal technicians to “book” an appointment with our veterinarians and animal welfare officers to ask questions, involve them in daily work, or discuss specific aspects of their tasks. ➡️ »Workshops«  We hosted several workshops and courses, including Animal Research Communication with Florian Alexander Dehmelt from Pro-Test Deutschland e.V. Some were exclusively for animal technicians, while others were open to the entire Institute, strengthening collaboration across departments. ➡️ »Creative events«  Photo and art contests reflecting animals, our lab animals, their role in research, and our responsibility to them. ➡️ »Virtual Escape Room« A specially designed game for our technicians to learn more about the different research topics at the Institute. ➡️ »Lunch Talks« Brief scientific presentations where scientists explained their research projects and specific experiments. This helped place procedures in a broader context and allowed caretakers to understand the purpose behind certain research experiments. The event later became a spin-off with a regular talk series exclusively for team of the animal facility. ➡️ »Social Events« Activities such as a talent show and movie nights fostered interaction within the animal caretaker team and between technicians and scientists. A huge thank you to the teams from the Animal Facility Management and our Animal Welfare Office, especially Caro J., Anna Maria Gartner, Stefanie Kunz, Kaitlyn Conway and Anne Zintzsch, who introduced us to this initiative! This year’s official motto was: “Technicians Uplift Research!” – and we couldn’t agree more. What are you doing during your Tech Week at your institution? #techweek #maxplanck #animalsinresearch
