Academics from KNUST visit Menlo. Last week we had the pleasure of hosting two Ghanaian Academics, Akyana Britwum and Michael Kweku Edem Donkor from the Department of Physics of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST), Ghana, at Menlo Systems. Their visit marks a significant step in advancing photonics education and research in Ghana and Sub-Saharan Africa. Through lab tours and engaging discussions, we showcased our cutting-edge photonics solutions and Menlo Systems’ dedication to empowering photonics initiatives and activities globally. THz TDS in Action: Revolutionizing Agricultural Quality Control. The reach of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) continues to expand. One emerging application is in agriculture, where THz technology is enhancing quality assessment for products like wheat. Researchers in China used our earlier-generation TERA K15 system to classify twelve wheat grain varieties based on gluten content. They implemented a THz-based convolutional neural network (CNN), deep learning approach to push the boundaries of agricultural analysis. Two-photon polymerization direct laser writing of ultra-small Brownian viscometers. Measuring the viscosity of small fluid volumes can be challenging. Researchers from the HUN-REN Biological Research Centre, Szeged and collaborators recently reported on two-photon polymerization direct laser written (3D printed) ultra-small Brownian viscometers to address exactly this. The team used Menlo Systems’ C-Fiber 780 – a model from 14 years ago! – to 3D print viscometer structures of a few tens of microns in size to successfully measure viscosities of Newtonian liquids. The results could lead to a practical low-volume viscometers that can be fully integrated into lab-on-a-chip devices.
