Eating disorders are one of the biggest problems menopausal women face. Low self-esteem and absence of mental support lead to problems in eating behavior that affect both the health status of the woman's shape and quality of life. Recent researches reveal a complex connection between menopause and disordered eating in middle-aged women, driven by hormonal, physical, and psychological shifts. These changes may increase the risk for both restrictive and binge eating patterns, yet the issue remains under-addressed in clinical practice. 🧪 Critical Insights: Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause can trigger increased appetite and binge eating. Post-menopausal body changes and societal pressures heighten the risk for restrictive eating. 👩⚕️ For Healthcare Professionals: 1. A shift in approach is needed. Traditional weight-focused interventions may fall short. 2. Mindful and intuitive eating should be promoted over calorie counting. 3. Empathetic conversations that address body image and mental well-being. 4. Self-compassion and body acceptance as key components of care. Supporting women holistically through menopause is essential for enhancing their quality of life. Menopause can affect the workplace and self-confidence, resulting in the need for early resignation or prolonged sick leaves among women of menopause age. European Menopause and Androgen Society (2020) reported that there were 657 million women aged between 45-to-59 years globally, with almost half contributing to the workforce. An Irish survey (2020) found that 40 percent of menopausal women thought about giving up work, with 12 percent leaving their job. Half stated it had some effect on their performance, while 30 percent said that menopause affected work a lot. At least 39 percent missed work days due to menopausal symptoms, with 22 percent missing more than three days.
