Dive Deep into the Interplay of Crystallography, Thermodynamics, and Microstructure. The MSIT Advanced School "Crystallography in Materials Science" runs parallel to the MSIT Winter School on Materials Chemistry at the same location! https://lnkd.in/ewVESQ6y This specialized program developed by Prof. Andreas Leineweber, TU Bergakademie Freiberg will explore advanced topics in crystallography and diffraction, connecting them to thermodynamics and microstructure to deepen participants' understanding of material systems. The school emphasizes the intricate relationships between crystal structure, thermodynamics, and microstructure—knowledge essential for analyzing and optimizing materials. Participants will gain advanced insights into: 1) Symmetry: symmetry groups; description of crystal structures; non-uniqueness of the description of a crystal structure and its standardization; Transformation between different crystal structure descriptions 2) Diffraction: general principles; techniques: X-ray and neutron diffraction (powder and single-crystal), (selected-area) electron diffraction, electron backscatter diffraction. Relation between crystal structure and diffraction information. Phase identification, structure refinement, role of symmetry. 3) Microstructure: defects/microstructure features of 0-3 dimensions. (Metastable) equilibria involving microstructure. Special diffraction effects due to microstructure, interfering with conventional structure determination. 4) DFT Calculations: energy landscape of crystals as determined by first principles calculations. Elastic constants, phonon dispersion. Energies due to different variations of structure. 5) Thermodynamics of Crystal Structures: which alternative crystal structures models may exist under certain boundary conditions and which ones might be more likely than the others. Examples will be superstructures, polytypes and distortion variants. Audience: this program is perfect for researchers and professionals looking to deepen their expertise in crystallography and its application in materials science. 📅 Join us 17-20 February 2025 for this unique opportunity to learn from experts and connect theory with practice. https://lnkd.in/eSrzNU5y We thank our sponsors for supporting our 3 events in Ebernburg: @Materials Design, Inc.; GTT-Technologies; Thermo-Calc Software; CompuTherm LLC; SGTE (Scientific Group Thermodata Europe). #Crystallography #MaterialsScience #MSITAdvancedSchool #symmetry #diffraction #DFT #microstructure #phaseequilibria #thermodynamics #Xray
