“Our work is to increase the probability of having some of the outliers as early as possible in as small as possible funds because like a fund, that will lead to a power law in our portfolio.” I've had many friends recommend that I chat with Ertan Can at Multiple Capital. That he's got a fascinating view when looking at the market. And on Superclusters' most recent episode, Ertan was everything and more! We cover a lot of ground here - about why a lot of European funds incorporate in Luxembourg to why the micro VC approach matters to how a fund of funds thinks about bringing on venture partners, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. My favorite 3 of which: 💍 Solo GPs are better than partnerships who change their team composition every 3 years. If you're going to add a partner to the partnership, make sure you're intentional about it. These are 15+ year marriages and it is better to date for a while (potentially a venture partner role to start with) than to get married then file for a divorce multiple times in the span of an LP/GP relationship. 🔥 The source from where warm intros come from matter. The highest signal intros come from LPs who are deploying against a similar thesis, more so than other LPs and GPs referring funds. And definitely more so than a family friend introing a fund. 🚄 The proliferation of fund accelerators make it both easier and harder to evaluate companies. Easier, in the sense that all decks look alike, so reading through decks have become much faster. Ertan spends on average 5 minutes per deck. Harder, in the sense that they all look alike and harder to see who actually has differentiators. Full episode in the comments
