  • Meet our #MAScholarship holder Salman Ali Thepdawala! Salman Ali is a Munich Aerospace PhD Scholar, and his research group involves collaboration between Universität der Bundeswehr München and Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V..   His research focuses on 𝐀𝐈-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 (COLA) in Large Multi-Satellite Systems. This involves evaluating the impact of COLA maneuvers on constellation performance and optimizing maneuver sequences in broadband mega-constellations to mitigate satellite network performance degradation. 🎓 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐡𝐃 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲? The most crucial lesson I've learned during my PhD journey is the importance of perseverance. Despite encountering challenges and setbacks, maintaining resilience and commitment to the research process is essential for progress and success.   🚀 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞? My research involves advancing AI-driven technologies for collision avoidance in satellite systems, particularly within broadband mega constellations. With the recent deployment of such constellations, there's a need to understand their operational constraints and impact. I aim to streamline operational processes for maneuvers while minimizing their impact on mega-constellation performance. Beyond my research, I actively contribute to the space community through my involvement with SGAC, where I advocate for space safety and sustainability, and with the IAF, where I am currently engaged with capacity building initiatives across Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. 🖥️ 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐣𝐨𝐛: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤? With my background and experience, I am looking for roles related to satellite systems engineering, astrodynamics (space safety and sustainability, AOCS, mission design, and trajectory optimization), AI applications in space, consulting, and/or project management within the space domain. ✨ 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐲? If I could have one superpower, it would be the ability to bring lasting peace to Earth. Imagine a world where conflicts and divisions are resolved, and collaboration and understanding thrive globally. With this power, I could help create an environment where people focus on shared goals, empathy, and collective progress – leading to a more harmonious and sustainable world for future generations. 👉 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐢 𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐦? 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬 𝐯𝐬. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬?! The tone of the 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐀𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 last week was light-hearted and cheerful but the content was serious: the contribution of contrails to climate warming is bigger than that of the CO2 emission of aviation. ✈️ But why do contrails have such a strong impact and why is it urgently needed to reduce them? After Christiane Voigts introduction the members of the panel discussion gave us insights into their personal convictions, passions, goals and hopes for aviation, climate and mankind.   👉 The key takeaway of the evening is that contrails have a huge negative impact on the climate but that they also can be seen and avoided - if there is enough willingness for doing so.   The discussion ended on a positive note: those working on making aviation become climate neutral should draw hope from the success of the 1980's, where the recovery of the ozone layer successfully united governments and companies around the world.   We thank the moderator Matteo Mirolo, the panellists Christiane Voigt, Christoph Todt, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐔𝐥𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐧 and Alejandra Martín Frías for their contribution and Marius W. Wedemeyer from Aerospace Ambition for the good cooperation! For the students in the Forum Munich Aerospace community we wish good luck with the upcoming exams and we're excited to share the Forum Munich Aerospace programme for the summer semester soon.
