This past Sunday, the European Nature Restoration Law officially came into force. This law, the first of its kind in the EU, not only mandates member states to protect but actively restore nature. The legislation, which faced challenges during its development, has now been enacted, setting legally binding targets for countries to revive their natural environments. Here are the key aspects: 🌊 Ecosystem restoration: The law mandates the restoration of at least 20% of the EU's land and marine areas by 2030 to revive all degraded ecosystems by 2050. 🌍 Restoration targets: Areas currently in poor condition must be restored by 30% by 2030, 60% by 2040, and 90% by 2050. The law also emphasises preventing further degradation of improved areas and safeguarding vital habitats, such as peatlands and coral beds. 🐝 Pollinators and species protection: The legislation introduces measures to reverse the decline of pollinators (like our beloved bees), focusing on the recovery of specific butterfly and bird species. It also supports planting at least 3 billion new trees by 2030. 🌳 Urban green spaces: EU countries are required to ensure no net loss of urban green spaces or tree cover to enhance urban living conditions and combat climate change.
